I am honestly so fucking dissapointed at #TRMNL (company) that I am going to look into how to decouple it from the company.

Would anyone be interested in joining a chat for it?

I am willing to drive some hacker community for this. I am shit with hardware but with enough help we might get something done.

Edit: i am not interested in building similar infra or whatever. I just want to send images to the device in local network.

Edit2: room made, followers only for now

Hi, may I suggest to ensure compatibility with other devices such as perhaps something like seeedstudio.com/XIAO-7-5-ePape… or whatever else people would recommend, so this also helps those who returned their devices on time? ;)

I'm definitely interested in following this, I saw @Wren was also working on github.com/BasementCat/fruitst…, perhaps forces can be joined somehow (if you both are interested that is)? :)

Keep me updated! I love the idea of TRMNL but hate the lies and the company :)

@SylvieLorxu I am taking basically that approach - so anything that can fetch a bmp from an URL and render it should probably just work, more or less (as I'm not familiar with the other offerings out there, I expect that there might need to be a little tweaking but I'm sure it can be made to work)

What's on my GitHub right now should be functional enough to use, actually - I'm trying to improve some rendering issues and am going to add authentication but it's definitely at the MVP stage

@nilsding Sort of, it just proxies everything through their server. All the plugins are closed off. So it is fairly useless for most cases: chaos.social/@SylvieLorxu/1148…

I would like to urge my followers to strongly avoid #TRMNL.

TRMNL calls itself "unbrickable" and Open Source, telling you you can host your own server and that basically everything is fully supported: web.archive.org/web/2025071818…. This is not true. The only thing a local server can do is send images to the device and *proxy from their proprietary server*: web.archive.org/web/2025071806….

To add insult to injury, TRMNL is trying to refuse me a refund, in gross violation of EU law.
