Devil's fingers fungus looks like something from Alien

The pod has broken and the tendrils emerge vertically. They are red with black globs, making it look a bit like a frightening alien mouth with teeth

Clathrus archeri (aka devil's fingers fungus) in its shell. The pod is speckled and veined beige, with a transparent "window" showing bright red tendrils

The pod has all-but disappeared, with the fungus now looking like a hand with its fingers touching at the tips

The "hand" has opened, with the "fingers" - still red but with a lot of black markings - now open
