while I’ve run Linux on a NUC for a personal streaming box for quite sometime, I only recently started using it on the desktop semi-regularly. It fits a majority of my needs, but overall it’s still just okay. I just never feel like the polish is there, the kind of thing that would make it more digestible for the mainstream. But I also don’t think it ever really needs to be either.

I've wanted to use Linux for years but was never motivated enough to really take the plunge. Then the BT Speak came along and so I started using it for the first time. It gives me a GUI that's very Windows-like and a shell that I can play with as I learn more. Some might wonder if I'd still feel this way if I found myself no longer involved with Blazie Technologies and I can honestly say that the answer is yes. It's a nice environment that's also very functional, although I've been using Windows for 30 years and it will likely always be my primary OS of choice. No, Windows isn't going anywhere once Windows 10 loses support and it won't be going anywhere once Windows 11 eventually leaves the scene, either. I'd love to get back into the Mac as I love Apple, their hardware and their support but I don't think I can ever get used to VoiceOver. I'll admit that using Windows for thirty years certainly is a major influence.

Hi, Sara.
It's always nice hearing from people who remember the Braille Blazer. It really was a nice embosser.
The Blazies started a new company called Blazie Technologies and I began officially working for them a little over a year ago. The name of the product is called the BT Speak, costing even less than the Braille 'n Speak 640 and the Braille 'n Speak 2000 at $1195.00 U.S. . It uses six different text to speech engines, including Vocalizer. It has an eight-dot Braille keyboard for input. Has USB C, Micro SD card slot, Bluetooth and Wi-Fi. A product with a Braille display is in development but we don't have a timeline for release.
I'll provide our contact info.
We're on Mastodon. Our handle is @BlazieTech.
Web site is www.BlazieTech.com which includes lots of information about the BT Speak, as well as our getting started guide, getting started audio tutorial, our user guide and release notes for all of the product's previous updates. You're free to download any of this material.
Phone number is (772) 214-1616.

@gocu54 @DavidGoldfield @mcourcel @BlazieTech Hey guys here is a demo and intro to the BT Speak we did with David a while ago on the show. It'll give you an idea of the device itself Nick. doubletaponair.com/relive-the-…

@doubletap @gocu54 @mcourcel @BlazieTech Thanks so much for posting that interview.
Nick, you can also go to our Web site where we have lots of demos, including the getting started audio tutorial. I realize that's not quite the same as having a BT Speak in front of you but at least you'll have an idea of how it sounds.

@DavidGoldfield @doubletap @mcourcel @BlazieTech I looked at the recordings and I do find it really cool. Someone really nice is sending me their BT-speak which is something I didn't expect today. I don't know which model but hopefully its still being updated. I do like the idea of having a pocket computer and this seems like a lot of fun to use.

@technolass @DavidGoldfield @doubletap @mcourcel @BlazieTech Thing is, it was not something i even expected, I just got a thing saying hey, I don't use mine, you can have it, I'll just ship it to you and I'm just here like what in the world? and its a BT-speak pro.

@gocu54 @technolass @doubletap @mcourcel @BlazieTech Nick, is this person giving you the BT Speak or are you just borrowing it? If they are giving it to you as a gift, please email us once you receive it. Please email us at info@blazie.net so that we can help you register the device.
in reply to David Goldfield

@DavidGoldfield @technolass @thinkgreenbag @mcourcel @BlazieTech I had one for many years, but it wore out eventually. I don't really need an embosser these days, but sometimes I feel tempted to get one just for the odd thing I might like to have in hard copy for reference.
