referrer tracking avoidance, apparently. The HTML version targets old or unusual browsers that may not have full support for referrer-policy.

Possibly similar to the 1x1 GIF trick very old sites used to align items in ancient browsers. “Hacker” “News” still does this in comment threads, for example.
