I'm always a bit amazed that these people somehow have the investigative savviness to track you down but not to figure out what curl is etc.

I'm guilty of reading it "badger" for years though.

Legitimate. Please implement popups for each (lib)curl call that user has to accept.
Likewise, each (lib)curl call should start with a HEAD request with a Reason header so that the remote endpoint may ask it's admin if it is OK to answer the upcoming HTTP request.
