completely blind computer geek, lover of science fiction and fantasy (especially LitRPG). I work in accessibility, but my opinions are my own, not that of my employer. Fandoms: Harry Potter, Discworld, My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic, Buffy, Dead Like Me, Glee, and I'll read fanfic of pretty much anything that crosses over with one of those.

#fediverse question: Has anyone written a Bridge between #lemmy, #piefed, #mbin, #kbin, or other fediverse software and #nntp? I have #usenet access, and would be happy to bridge some of the various blindness groups on Usenet onto the fediverse.

koldfront.dk/git/illuminant/ab… There is Illuminant, which is not exactly a bridge, but an #ActivityPub server that also talks #nntp

illuminant - ActivityPub server with NNTP interface

OK I just looked up Usenet, and it sounds interesting, basically a decentralised sharing system.

It predates basically every centralized platform you've ever heard of. Forums/message boards, social media... all of it. The only thing it might not actually predate is email. In fact, time was you could get your usenet posts in the same client you got your email.

I'm trying to figure out how to get signed up on Usenet, but it looks like you have to pay to get on to Usenet Server, bummer.

@alexchapman@quanin Nope. There are free text-only usenet servers available. The main one is eternal-september.org.

You can probably also still set up your own if you're that kind of person. I briefly talked myself into and then out of that a few years ago.

If you use Thunderbird for email, apparently it supports Usenet. Other than that I have no idea.

Oh I once tried Thunderbird and never really liked the UI. When I was reading the Usenet for beginners article on the Usenet Server site, they mentioned something called Newspin, or something like that, need to try that.
