I'm undecided if open source actually won or if it's just cheaper for companies when people maintain code for free.

I see the following issue: One of the main motivations for free software / open source was to give users freedom to change the software according to their needs and in this way making sure that technological evolution takes their interests into account. But this is increasingly not feasible anymore because of the high complexity of many /not all) projects where only full-time developers can meaningfully contribute.

Open source hardware design would be good. RISC-V and more.
