SFFBookClub February poll & March sequels month

For February: both new options are titles that have been rumoured to have been censored out of the Hugos. I haven't been following that controversy closely enough to know how solid the evidence is, but they both sound interesting anyway so I figured I'd include them: harpercollins.com/products/bab… & xiranjayzhao.com/index.php/boo…

I'd like to read Babel. I already read the Poppy Wars trilogy and enjoyed it quite a lot, though there were some rather dismal parts.

Already read Iron Widow. It's interesting, though a bit YA-ish.

SFFBookClub February poll & March sequels month
We seem to end up doing about one YA title a year, and they're usually a mixture of good and bad lightness. Often a nice break after something very heavy (e.g. this month's pick outside.ofa.dog/book/2743/s/ho… ), but also usually a bit "thin" in character development and/or resolving tensions too easily. Does that sound like your impression of Iron Widow?

Yeah, I wouldn't say resolves tensions too easily, maybe, but character motivations are a little thin, a bit stereotyped. Almost like evil archetypes that can't change sometimes. That said, there's also pretty violent stuff, so it's not YA-ish in that regard. Also some of the world-building feels a bit inspired by cartoon conventions, which makes it seem that way to me but that may be a personal bias.

I was already thinking of rereading Iron Widow before the sequel comes out at the end of April, so that has my vote this time around.

This is definitely quite a line-up though.

Agreed about this being a good lineup. I was planning to read Babel when it was first released, but it always got bumped for something I was more interested in. Then it was late enough I decided to wait until the Hugo noms were released since I figured it would be included. When it wasn't, I pushed it even further down the list. I have a renewed interest now because it does appear to have been wrongfully disqualified.
Siren Queen has also been on my list for a while. I'm just learning about Iron Window, and I've already read Light from Uncommon Stars. (Note to Eldang: Stars is very heavy on the violins.)
