Parental authority, found kink

Me: I am HORRIFIED by this Qing dynasty primer. It's like a parental version of 1984, complete with thoughtcrime!

Me, later: Actually, maybe it would work as a code of conduct for extreme power exchange. FOR CONSENTING ADULTS.

Better translation, probably not great for screenreaders: tsoidug.org/dizigui_trans_simp…

Some seems reasonable, but some is... a bit much? I agree that the emphasis on submission has a bit of a kinky feel to it.

@modulux Yes, my first encounter with chapter 1 horrified me so much that I was surprised how much I liked the rest (though I haven't finished reading it yet). And I do think it is very useful to have all the etiquette explained clearly, especially for people on the spectrum.

But I am so damn glad I live in a time when this feels kinky instead of oppressive reality.

I do find it very telling that the Confucian sages seem most keen on respect for subordinates when they're talking about the relationship between the king and his officials. [spiky grin]

Haha, not to mention all the stuff like "don't read books not written by sages". Bit of a self-interested thing going on there. I think there was only one reminder in that essay to elder siblings to "befriend" the younger sibling.

BTW, if you read the Wikipedia translation, I am certain the bit about not forgetting your older siblings' birthdays and wearing all black as penance for disrespect to them was inserted by some prankster.

Haha, I thought it was a bit much but I thought it was true. Thanks for letting me know!

When I was in primary school they used to play this through classroom speakers before class begins.

Many of those ancient Chinese filial piety stories can be downright creepy/terrifying to modern audiences, for example Guo Ju’s story: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Twen…

Wow, most of them are really harsh. Interesting that there's a lot of stories where some supernatural intervention makes for a happy ending. Why do you think there's so much emphasis on sacrificing for the family?
