Lots of fun happening on matrix-wysiwyg - the world's first(?) native cross-platform WYSIWYG editor, written in #rust (with platform-specific bindings on top) for all your Matrix message composing needs. Here's the test jig for autogenerating test cases (we're still debugging :D)

it's inconsistent. If the button is "b" for bold, the tag should be <b>. If the tag is <strong>, the button should say so. HTML elements is about semantics, not rendering (<strong> text may be rendered not in bold)
