Anybody having experience running a messaging service based on #xmpp or #matrix for approx. 1000 users?

I did deploy a #synapse (matrix) test install but was not impressed. Especially the federation feature consumed a lot of resources and the client experience was rather disappointing. Joining large rooms took ages even with the latest "fast room join" MSCs. Anybody having better luck with an XMPP deployment?

we are running an #XMPP server (ejabberd) with a user count that is at least an order of magnitude higher without any issues. (concurrent online that is)
#xmpp

@daniel

Thanks for the information.

Might I ask what hardware you would consider sufficient for approx 1000 users, mostly 1:1 communications with maybe 100 rooms?

Do you have 1:1 video and voice calls enabled?

And do you have - by chance - any comparison to matrix?

Quicksy.im, which is not the server I was talking about earlier, but has ~1500 concurrent users is running on some relatively cheap 2 CPU / 8GB RAM Hetzner VM. And yes that has A/V calls enabled. idk get a cheap VM and scale up if you need to.
