#emojis
Very rare that I feel an inclination to include little pictures, except in replies to friends who love their hearts and flowers. Today I tried one in a toot and then deleted it, worried about accessibility.

What do #screenreaders do with emojis?

My phone's small screen makes them look like confetti. Sometimes even if the picture is decipherable, its meaning isn't.

Generally we'll read them, like 😀 "grinning face" 🤦‍♂️"man facepalming" or 🐣"Hatching chick". But, because of that description, it can mean that a string of emojis in a row, purely for decoration, can take a lot longer for a screen reader user to get through. So if it's raining & you put: ⛈️ 🌩️☔🌦️then NVDA will read it as: "Cloud with lightning and rain", "Cloud with lightning", "Umbrella with raindrops", "Sun behind rain cloud" - which gets the message across, but is quite verbose.

On Mastodon, a mouse user can hover over emoji to get a description as well. Note that this may differ from what NVDA reads. Just looking at the four weather ones:

⛈️ NVDA reads: "Cloud with lightning and rain", mouse over reads :thunder_cloud_and_rain:
🌩️ NVDA: "Cloud with lightning", Mouse: :lightning:
☔"Umbrella with raindrops", mouse: :unbrella_with_raindrops:
🌦️ "Sun behind rain cloud", mouse: :partly_sunny_rain:

So it should be close but may vary slightly.
