Aah, more #AppleTax. Thanks so much...

'Apple is requiring that Patreon use their in-app purchasing system and remove all other billing systems from the Patreon iOS app by November 2024. This means that starting in November, new memberships purchased in the iOS app will be subject to Apple's 30% App Store fee.'

The clear solution here is for Patreon to just discontinue in-app memberships and have a message that says "you cannot subscribe using the app, sorry!" It's absolutely reprehensible for Apple to try and take a 30% cut of money that is intended to go straight to creators, but Patreon should not enable them either, even if making that change creates a worse user experience. Apple refuses to even allow app developers to tell their users about the 30%, so the only way to win here is to just cut Apple off at the knees.

They're most likely not allowed to, mastodon.social/@stroughtonsmi…

@miki @simon Wait a minute, didn't I hear recently about them being forced, probably by the EU, to allow letting you purchase on websites? Could ahve sworn there was some kind of recent change to the billing model to allow third-party purchases via websites, though not in-app.

@x0 @simon In most places, you still have to pay the fee (sans payment processing costs), even if you do that. It was something like 27% if I remember correctly.

It's not collected automatically, and Apple has the right to audit your records if you apply for that entitlement.
