OpenAI defines their mission as creating "highly autonomous systems that outperform humans at most economically valuable work."

We need to flip this framing.

The economy is best understood as the way humans divide up the work, and distribute the results.

In a money-based economy, this means that people earn money from their work and spend that money on the products made by others. When technology makes people more productive, less work is needed for the same output, and the value of the resulting product is reduced.

Unless the supply of that product can be somehow constrained by way of legal or economic restrictions, this means the price will drop.

What makes work economically valuable is that it is performed by humans.

Unless we have an economy that is no longer based on money, highly autonomous systems would eliminate value. This is unlikely to be a mission that would attract billions in funding from investors who hope to share in all the money OpenAI plans to earn in the future.

the supply can be constrained by cost of inputs such as AI via monopoly or price fixing?

I didn’t read this as “economic” as in a natural limit on the price floor due to resource scarcity etc, but somthing that openAI’s investors can control as long as MSFT and Musk occasionally have a phone call
