Reading some people complaining about image descriptions because they help train AI. I'm not sure what interpretation is worse: that there's a new excuse for not including alt text, as if there weren't enough already; or that people may actually earnestly be this spiteful about AI so as to regard helping others as a necessary collateral damage of their Buttlerian jihad.

If they're worried about their alt text being scraped, then why are they still posting at all?
in reply to Jordi (Angry Pronking)

Presumably they think the alt text linked to the image is more usable for training for image description tasks and such, but honestly, it doesn't make a great deal of sense.
in reply to modulux

that's ridiculous. I'm gonna guess that majority already do not do so. They just want an excuse. At least, I hope that is true and not actually influencing people to not include alt text when they've been doing so all along
in reply to Neon

I hope so, it's such a silly reason not to do it. Not to mention, there are so many other ways AI models get fed, it's strange to focus on this particular one.
in reply to modulux

honestly? so fucking what if my alt text is useful training data? that just means in the future, we might have AI which is more capable of generating alt texts than if I didn't add alt text?
in reply to sodiboo

Apparently that's a bad thing according to this person, depriving people of the opportunity to get paid for alt text. Never mind that it's one of the most legitimate and relevant uses for these models.
