There are a lot of Canadians who don’t want to visit the US just now. But if you have to, I would strongly advise going by air, because US CBP is in the airport in Canada. So they can still arbitrarily refuse entry because you voted Liberal or your name is Nadia or whatever, but they can’t throw you into detention without recourse, which they definitely can at the highway crossings, and seem to be doing more of.

Once in US clearance area you are (used to be, anyway) on “US soil.” Kinda like an embassy. 15 years ago, just before I boycotted US travel, I was on a fresh, lawyer-approved TN VISA for work with a major corp, and some guy at US border security in Toronto decided he wanted to be a jerk. I was held for 3 hours, no phone, no contact with anyone, right up to boarding, and the airline had to wait for me to run to the gate. They’ve been training for this for years.

@graymattergrcltd you used to be able to say you wanted to return to Canada and they legally had to let you go. I remember that changed a few years back? Now they can arrest you. You'd still have better odds though, I don't think they can ship you to the US without Canadian permission, but I could be wrong.

Definitely something we should look at now though, with an increasingly hostile power having the right to arrest on Canadian soil...
