Oh the irony. I'm reading an article about the pervasiveness of CCTV surveillance in public spaces, on a website run by a public broadcaster:

https://www.rnz.co.nz/programmes/in-depth-special-projects/story/2018837763/the-streets-have-eyes

The page is trying to pull JS from no less than 12 third-party domains, at least 6 of which are owned by companies known to collect user data (Chartbeat, IMRworldwide, NewRelic, and 3 from Goggle). Even while blocking the known trackers with NoScript, the article is unreadable on my mobile.

Even with all the non-dodgy third-party JS allowed in NoScript, I still can't see some of the data visualizations embedded in the page.

It's a great article though, casting serious doubt on whether the public money spent on CCTV in Aotearoa has real public benefit.

"Indeed, taxpayers and ratepayers have spent millions on installing and running CCTV systems.

$29,773,472
Installation
past five years

$5,426,065
Running costs
12 months

And the above totals don’t even capture the full amount of money spent. Some organisations RNZ approached wouldn’t or couldn’t share what they had spent installing cameras in the past five years."
