#AudioMo 2025 day 6. This recording was made in 2018 when I was still in high school, a year before I graduated. This is a small elevator that they had to have to comply with the ADA, since the front hallway had a second floor. Recorded with my phone and for some reason tons of compression, sorry about that.

Wow. Ours just... didn't do anything I guess.

My office's old relay-based elevator has simple buzzers / tone generators, but that's only for confirmig that a button was pressed, not for announcing floors or doors opening. The one where I live just does nothing.

It's actually part of the accessibility requirement here. When an elevator arrives at a floor, it must have an audible indicator. This was usually a bell. Better yet, this indicator must be a single tone when going up, and a double tone when going down. That way, in a bank of elevators, a blind person can know that the elevator they wanted has arrived based on where they're going without being able to see any light-up panels, and also track where the door is.

@miki Nowadays they'll say "going up" and "going down", but many of even those still ding.

@miki I like the system based on one tone for up or two tones for down because it doesn't need to be localized.

@matt With That said, voice based announcements are pretty common here. Nowhere near universal, but with public buildings especially, yeah you'l hear them more often than not.

@matt We have one at the shopping mall narby that does floor announcements, doors opening and doors closing announcements, as well as announcing the direction in which it's going. In two languages, Polish and English. I've seen it be two or three samples behind realtime.

The "one tone up, two tones down" thing does appear here sometimes, though many people aren't aware of it. It's usually an electronic bell for us, think "airplane seatbelt indicator". ADA-style Beeping as you pass floors is super rare, I've seen it and love the elevators that do it for the "cool factor", but yeah, very very uncommon.
