Medievalists: At work I've seen a couple of astrological 15th-century woodcuts of Andromeda depicted either wearing men's clothes or semi-nude with a penis. I've been digging around, and all I can find on this was something along the lines of "it's common to see her depicted as androgynous in medieval art" with no further comment.
I read so much material on queerness and the middle ages, I can't believe I can't find anything on this.
Anyone familiar with this or have any leads?
