Universal Blue is generally available today! We're out of beta and ready to showcase everything a Linux desktop can be. Our work has been to show how many problems in client Linux are already solved from the cloud native world. We hope you'll join us on this journey!

The uBlue maintainers also have a message they want to share for @fedora :)

Updates on Bluefin, Bazzite, and Aurora coming soon!

Just rebooted and I’m up and running with Fedora Silverblue 40.

(Just tried reinstalling mozilla-openh264 – so videos work in Firefox – but it failed with the same error. Not a big deal, I’m using @Vivaldi as my main browser these days anyway and I guess the Fedora folks will fix this in time.)

More importantly, I wonder if the screen reader has been fixed yet. (Yes, Fedora ships with a broken screen reader.)

#Fedora #fedora40 #Silverblue #upgrade #mozilla #OpenH264 #rpmOstree #error #a11y

Note that I just encountered the following issue:

https://github.com/fedora-silverblue/issue-tracker/issues/536

Which I worked around by removing mozilla-openh264 before running the rebase again, at which point it succeeded:

rpm-ostree remove mozilla-openh264

#Fedora #fedora40 #Silverblue #upgrade #mozilla #OpenH264 #rpmOstree #error

Just checked and yes, the screen reader is still broken in Fedora 40. (Cannot be controlled; keyboard shortcuts/modifier key doesn’t work.)

So this is yet another release where the screen reader is broken by default.

It’s amazing to me that this is not a showstopper.

:fedora: Congratulations to the entire @fedora community on the release of F40!

And this is awesome: The "Slimbook Fedora 2" laptop looks like a great way to get more people up and running with #FreeSoftware and best of all, they donate 3% of the proceeds to @gnome.

Here's a neat exploration of the curb cut effect for accessibility in @gnome - using accessibility tools to aid in testing automation! Has pros and cons identified in the article, but interesting nonetheless.

Told you folks, it is no April Fool's joke.

Good morning, Mastodon! Quick question about #gnome in #fedora (for a friend): Since the Gnome project is not actively supporting tray (notification) icons, how would a user monitor if a given software is running as expected in the background? The question is specifically related to #InSync; a software used to keep cloud files synced to local machine.

Must be the wrong article 🤔

Have you tested the #Fedora distribution with the #GNOME desktop environment? They work hard to make it fully accessible.

I admit that the default synthesized voices are particularly awful, but they can easily be changed with Pied.

Big thank you to @dogphilosopher for an update to flatpaks on Bluefin. Now flatpaks can be preinstalled from the ISO rather than having to download them on first boot in order to provide the intended experience. That means @thunderbird on the dock by default!

Awesome step forward for us to be able to bring you intended apps by default without straying from @flathub

If you can help with testing the new ISOs, please see below for instructions.

I am working on a GTK/#Relm4 password manager already 😎
But it is a client for #BitWarden/#VaultWarden only.
You want to build a local one?

Are you experienced with GTK and Rust ? :gnome: ❤️ :rust:

We are looking to contract someone to work on the new GNOME Password Manager 🔑

We want it to become a core/default app and help secure millions of users.

You'll be working with the GNOME Foundation, a non-profit dedicated to building emancipatory technologies for everyone.

Please send resume / portfolio to stf@gnome.org

Boosts welcome :boost_love:

🚨 ⚠️ Emergency PSA: A critical security exploit was discovered in the xz package recently, used for compression and decompression on nearly all Linux distributions.

Good news!

No, it's not a Dacia Sandero. But, I was able to boot off of the KDE spin of Fedora 40 Beta ISO on my Microsoft Surface Pro 3 without any modifications!

#Fedora #Linux

After backing up my files, I decided to do a clean install of the KDE spin of Fedora 40 on to the Surface Pro 3.

Everything went smoothly and starting to get everything restored.

More info on how I set up my Fedora machines and the fun that had been getting the installer of Fedora 39 working on the Surface, checkout the two articles on my blog at: https://blog.linh.social/tag/fedora/

Anyone in my network interested in research and prototype network portal for Flatpak?

In the long run we are interested in:

• Give more control to users over app network access
• Allow apps that need network access to be considered “Safe”

We expect something like unsharing the network namespace and a bridge on the host for permissions / monitoring.

Boost welcome :boost_love:

Wrote a blog post talking about the developments with PipeWire camera support in applications and also the FireWire FFADO support. If you read my previous tweets about this there is not to much new in the blog post.

A few days ago I talked about why I chose #Fedora #Silverblue and how finding the right environment for me would be a motivation to contribute to #OpenSource projects, something I've always wanted to do. Well... I finally made it! 🎉

I've implemented a small feature (link below) in #Errands, the best to-do app for #GNOME. It's already merged so it will appear in a future version! ✅

Yes, it's a modest first step, but also an impulse to keep supporting projects I like! 😊

Keep testing the OBS and Firefox PipeWire camera support. Screenshot below is Firefox and OBS sharing a camera through PipeWire and also OBS embedding the Firefox window plus also having my USB HDMI capture screen included. #pipewire #linux #obsstudio #fedora #flatpak

With todays release of @OBSProject 30.1.0, which of course is available as a Flatpak, I was finally able to have Helvum display this for video streams through @pipewirep. I have to admit I did have some issues, but hopefully we can iron those out quickly in PipeWire and @libcamera. #linux #pipewire #fedora

Wim (@wtaymans) got the Firewire device yesterday and is now working on making PipeWire work with the FFADO drivers. He got it working on his own system now, but with a latency of 5.3ms but he is now working on getting to the 4.7ms that JACK currently got. #pipewire #linux #fedora

We've been pretty busy -- https://projectbluefin.io is on track to go GA around 18 April. Here's the latest updates!

It's almost been 40 years since the first release of #Fedora!

Just kidding.

I just wanted to share that little micro-panic attack with friends.

I'm still wondering whether I should install KDE Connect or not. On the one hand, great smartphone integration on the computer, on the other hand: do I really need it? Longer battery life is more important to me, and for the few times I want to transfer photos to the computer, I can also connect the USB cable.

GNOME attaches great importance to #accessibility, so I vote for a #Fedora with #GNOME 😺

And since disabled people really need a particularly stable and robust operating system, I will even go so far as to recommend the immutable Fedora Silverblue version.

https://fedoraproject.org/atomic-desktops/silverblue/

@destructatron
I've just tested in a virtual machine and you're right. But even with Alt F2, which you need to know, it's clearly not the right solution.

Since #Fedora is working on a new installer, they should take inspiration from the #Ubuntu one (which also recently redesigned its own), which now lets you configure accessibility right from the start.

https://9to5linux.com/ubuntu-24-04-lts-desktop-installer-will-be-updated-with-accessibility-features

Part of me is tempted to use #UBlue to make a custom #Fedora #Silverblue image to add in the Pop_OS Gnome extensions, make #vim the default editor, and #Thunderbird the default mail reader and call it "Blue Bacon Linux"

#Linux

Y'know, something which has been bothering me for years…

#Crash reporting is super useful. It highlights #critical #issues in #software. On #Fedora with #GNOME this can be set up to #automaticallyreport such issues.

GNOME assures me the report is #anonymous.

In order to submit the report, I must register, using verified personally identifying information.

No.

Everyone is held to the same #privacy standards. If I cannot submit with #anonymity, or you lie about it, you do not get my support.

Getting ready to ship this bad boy to Wim Taymans so hopefully he can use it to fix the FireWire issues discovered by
Venn Stone in PipeWire

#Gnome on #Fedora is such a nice, polished desktop experience. Ever since switching to it (maybe about a year ago?), I've been a significantly happier computer user. And the new versions keep on getting better. I don't think I've ever been as happy with my computing situation (maybe with the exception when I got my first computer of my own as a child, but that feeling is hard to beat).
