Dictionary.com laid off all its lexicographers this month.

Presumably to replace them with AI. (My opinion.)

Sadly, thesaurus.com and dictionary.com are two of my most important resources when writing. I will look for alternatives now, because they basically decided to stop being a good service.

Enshittification is spreading at an ever increasing rate. It makes me sad. I thought we were headed towards a good future. Instead, it's turning... brown. 😬

I made a Classical Chinese Poetry Bingo to help people recognize the common tropes and motifs.🤣 These show up frequently in the modern poetry I translate as well. Do you recognize anything from your readings or from pop culture? Tag yourself. I'm "feeling sad on a boat" lol

Remember to include little human touches in your work so that it breathes. Random bits of humour. Rude or angry graffiti. Kids playing with a rock.

Hey, remember that you can join #WritingTreat during #NaNoWriMo this year again. That's when we really kicked it off last year. Oh and, ofc the rest of the month for NaNo-prep. No one is required to follow NanoWrimo "rules or goals"

We're a twice-weekly writing group, with few option for video or voice chat. We're ND friendly, and try to focus once or twice during a two hours slot. 😅
We are actively working to be an anti-racist space, and filled with queer and trans people.

There will be space for additional sessions during the month, but that requires more people to host. And even if you only want to offer to host once session during the whole month, that could really help the community!

Feel free to ask me or @ljwrites for an invite to the matrix chat room as well!

And wiki info is here (we try to keep this updated)
https://wiki.writeout.ink/writingtreat/start
You can Check out our other hosts from under the hashtag too.

Taken from #Google's updated "privacy" policy.
I mean, I find it ironic because there doesn't seem to be any #privacy to speak of here 😆

I know this is no laughing matter, but I am at the "oh what the hell can I do so might as well laugh about it" stage 🤣

Here’s my suggestion: get your AI to write books, then get your AI to read them.

Repeat this infinitely in a closed loop of techbro busywork until you get bored or die.

Leave the rest of us to create and appreciate the art form in a modest human way.

@libreoffice

Hey, folks.

I love using Libre Office and have been for years. I write all my books with it. I believe you're leagues better than the MS version.

So why, oh why has Writer lost the ability to remember the last cursor position?

It's beyond annoying, especially when editing a 250 page document. This is one of the most important functions, to be able to continue where you stopped - why is it even broken?

Why has it been broken for so long?

Copyrighted works from 1927 entered the public domain on Jan 1, 2023. Here's a selection #WritingCommunity #AmWriting https://web.law.duke.edu/cspd/publicdomainday/2023/

I was gifted a copy of this book by Tor Teen Publishing. I have not read it yet. But I’m excited to read it. It follows a pair of Black, magical twins who have to solve the thirty year old murder of their mother in order to save the New Orleans magical community from utter destruction. #bookstodon #blackbookstodon #writingcommunity #amwriting #bipocauthors #writewithmichael #dybpublishing

Publishers Weekly's annual survey of publishing industry jobs and salaries shows only incremental change since the last one, in 2019, with diversity actually slightly down #WritingCommunity #AmWriting https://www.publishersweekly.com/pw/by-topic/industry-news/publisher-news/article/91157-the-pw-publishing-industry-salary-survey-2022.html

Everyone has a book signing horror story, and lots of writers shared theirs in response to a debut author's tweet about her disappointing experience #WritingCommunity #AmWriting https://www.npr.org/2022/12/06/1140833403/a-new-writer-tweeted-about-a-low-book-signing-turnout-and-famous-authors-commise

In this Substack post, I interviewed my agent about how he chose which editors to send my novel manuscript to (and his sub lists are #diverse in a way the #publishing industry often isn't, and the novel eventually drew three publishers to an auction). I also share thoughts on revising to prepare for this process. Hope it's helpful!

In an open letter to HarperCollins, more than 150 literary agents say they will not submit clients' mss. to the company until an agreement is reached with striking employees #WritingCommunity https://fortune.com/2022/11/29/harpercollins-staff-strike-literary-agents-support-open-letter/

Interesting article from Jonathan Bailey of Plagiarism Today on copyright issues to consider if you're considering establishing your own Mastodon instance--probably the last thing most people would think about (but it shouldn't be) #WriterBeware #WritingCommunity #Mastodon https://www.plagiarismtoday.com/2022/11/22/the-copyright-challenge-with-mastodon/

New #WriterBeware blog post: Long-Standing Payment Problems At Cricket Media. This well-known publisher of respected magazines for children is a paying market--but writers and illustrators say they are paid late or not at all. Complaints go back at least to 2018 #WritingCommunity https://writerbeware.blog/2022/11/18/long-standing-payment-problems-at-cricket-media/

I started writing on Substack to talk about the process a manuscript takes in traditional publishing, and how to navigate the process without losing the book's soul.

It's a happy story that starts at the end of many rejections, and I'll post some threads in case the takeaways are faster/easier to get here vs. Substack. The site is The Bird's Eye, and it's completely free and goes to folks' inboxes every other week.

Lesson 5. The agent has to say yes, but SO DO YOU. Find *your* agent, not just any agent. Preserving your power to say no is important at many stages of the publishing journey (multiple offers, bad deal terms, etc.), and you want an agent who respects you and gives good advice. I can't stress this enough. 6/8

New post at the Writer Beware blog: Whatever Happened To Catstone Books? A deep dive into the sudden demise of a BIPOC/LGBTQ+ -focused publisher, and what it may say about a worrying trend that writers should be aware of #WriterBeware #WritingCommunity https://writerbeware.blog/2022/11/11/whatever-happened-to-catstone-books/
