Wow!

@snikket_im just started their new federated instant messaging hosting service (based on #XMPP) for everyone.

This can really be a gamechanger for instant messaging.

You can bring your own domain name if you want to.

This means: for about 5.50€ (6$) a month (according to the website) you get ten instant messaging accounts for you and your family/friends using your personal domain name (not included).

And you are able to talk to every other XMPP user out there.

Voted "yes" on (assumed) behalf of at least one #Conversations user who is not in Fediverse.

For myself, I already have a different solution for #SMS: #sms4you, an #XMPP server component, that sends and receives SMS via any #Jabber client using cheap hardware.

https://sms4you-team.pages.debian.net/sms4you/

Written by @pantierra and myself. Slightly similar to what @j does. We think about porting it to #slidge by @nicoco.

I actually already do something like this based on the #app SMS to URL forwarder (https://f-droid.org/packages/tech.bogomolov.incomingsmsgateway/). The URL corresponds to a very simple endpoint (a CGI written in Bash!) that receives the SMS details and resends it to a #XMPP MUC.

My use case is that I have a mobile phone with an overseas SIM card that I keep at home while I want to know when it receives a SMS.

So having this functionality as part of #Conversations_im would be great.

Anyone's using XMPP? Want to give it another try.

I just read a review of Beeper¹ and I’m now thinking about SMS integration into #Conversations_im in the form of forwarding (mirroring) your SMS to your other #XMPP clients. (For example your desktop client or a tablet that runs Conversations but doesn’t have a SIM card.)

Obviously this would need buy in from at least one desktop client to display forwarded messages (@gajim, @dino).

Do you think this is something you would use?

XEP-xxxx: Message Displayed Synchronization

With Message Displayed Synchronization Conversations is now able to synchronize the read state (displayed) state of public conferences across multiple devices.

We have an XMPP booth at the Chemnitzer Linux Tage. Join us for discussions about federated instant messaging and for stickers. #xmpp #dino #conversations_im #clt2024

Leute initiieren noch OTR Sessions in XMPP Chats. WTF. Aus welchem Jahr kommt ihr? 2005? XD

Welcher Client kann das denn überhaupt noch?

Google had accepted a version of #Conversations_im with address book integration that explicitly asks the user for consent to process the contact list locally on their device before requesting contacts permission. Our privacy policy included explicit wording w.r.t. local processing of the contact list.

However it’s unthinkable for Google that someone would request contacts permission and then not upload them. A few days later they changed their mind and threatened to remove the app again.

What would be the essential features that you would expect in a #team #chat? I mean features that you actually use at work or in association, or you would very much like to see.

I'm asking to check how far we are in common #XMPP clients, but don't hesitate to quote features event if they are already present in some clients.

Oh. Ejabberd 24.02 released. It's able to connect to Matrix? 😳

#Linux #opensource #messaging

A bunch of XMPP developers and I (@dino, @Monal, #Conversations_im) will have a booth at the Chemnitzer Linux Tage (March 16th & 17th 2024).

Come talk to us about #XMPP and collect some merch.

My nearly-10-year-old #prosody configuration is becoming a mess. I'm thinking about restarting my #xmpp server from scratch. Maybe to switch to #ejabberd by curiosity.

I checked the @gajim issue tracker for PKIX over Secure HTTP (POSH) support and it looks like it was implemented already 5 years ago: https://dev.gajim.org/gajim/gajim/-/issues/9083

But I can't find the setting in the current #Gajim version and didn't managed to connect to my #xmpp server so far which uses "PKIX over Secure HTTP" for ssl verification.

#followerpower, any ideas?

Use XMPP! It's totally secure and federated. The only thing you can use it to talk about is how much you love XMPP and how much you hate Matrix.

What is We Distribute, exactly? 🤔

We Distribute is a CC-licensed open media project. It serves as a people-focused tech publication, with the goal of informing and educating people about three things:

1. Decentralized Communications
2. User empowerment
3. The future of the Internet

Most of what we do involves reporting on the day-to-day developments of the #Fediverse. In fact, our articles are ActivityPub-enabled, and integrate directly into the network.

However, the Social Web / Decentralized Social movement involves far more efforts and technologies that we think are also worth reporting on: #Matrix, #XMPP, #Bluesky, #Nostr, #SecureScuttlebutt, and #Solid all bring interesting pieces to the puzzle.

Our ultimate goal is to showcase the ongoing efforts to change the shape and form of the Internet itself, at a grassroots level. Join us on this exciting journey. #WeDistribute

thank you _so_ much!!

I just installed it on my Android phone!

Super grateful 🤗

That's really ridiculous. #Google decided to remove the #xmpp client #Conversations because they think it uploads contact data.

Beside the fact that it doesn't upload any contact data, there are many mainstream messengers which exactly do this, all available on #gplay.

Additionally it seems to be extremly hard or even impossible to get in contact with someone who can explain the decision and revert it.

Such gatekeepers are extremly harmful.

Google has just removed #Conversations_im from the Play Store because they think we are uploading the user’s contact list. We don’t.

To celebrate Conversations being back on the Play Store and to deny Google their 15% cut I made the app free for the next ~48 hours. 😜

If you are new here: Check out #XMPP. It's federated, provider and vendor independent instant messaging. It’s great!

https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=eu.siacs.conversations

Or get it from #fdroid - That version even has address book integration and public channel discovery! 😂

The further #Matrix goes the more obvious it becomes we should've stuck to #XMPP. The developer time wasted on Matrix is immense, imagine if that effort would've been stuck into making a nice XMPP server implementation that plays well with #Docker or #Kubernetes, with all the basic features people desire baked in by default. They would've had time to spare on a nice client if they felt this was needed to make a nice complete package to market.

I've just pushed the implementation of a GUI for calls in the CLI frontend of #Libervia

That means that you have a full-featured #Qt GUI accessible quickly from your #terminal to make or receive your #XMPP calls. Can also be useful to compensate for clients missing A/V calls.

Documentation at https://libervia.org/__b/doc/backend/libervia-cli/call.html

It works on #X11 and #Wayland and supports desktop sharing.
