It seems there is a fail-safe way to show how much the GPT behind Be My AI can hallucinate - the slips of paper inside fortune cookies. Both a friend and I have had false results with these in two different languages, none of them being English, over a different period of time. Any experiences? And that's my random post for the morning. #Accessibility #Blind #AssistiveTechnology

TIL: #Wayland breaks most screen readers, as they are not not intended by design. (they need to interact with other apps)

Wayland is now the default in pretty much all gnome distros.

Orca has workarounds, but they are not merged and not fully working. (And a blind user can't built it without a working screen reader)

I'm not entirely sure if I got this correct, but it seems to me like the #Linux community once again booted the #blind.

#Blind Masto peeps: Anyone know where we blinks go to find dates online? Any mailing lists/Facebook/WhatsApp/clubhouse/other groups specifically for blind dating? I so far only know of one. #SinglesAwarenessDay

I missed almost the entire Superbowl, (for very good reason), but I do have a favorite commercial: an ad from Google highlighting an #Accessibility feature on the Pixel 8, featuring #Blind talent both in front of and behind the camera, and open #AudioDescription More media like this please! https://youtu.be/o4a92FmcWMM?si=YCsEsNaxGYeH5L4M

*None* of the #AI hardware including the Humane pin, Rabbit R1, this newly announced Frame glasses, or Facebook's glasses is accessible for #blind people. You'd think the interfaces would be made accessible. But none of these products have #accessibility built in for the setup or the connecting apps. In case you're wondering, I've specifically asked each of the companies.

For those of us who sometimes nod off at work, how do you stay focused and alert during times when there isn't much going on?

Question for #blind people, particularly those who use both a #Braille display and a laptop, if you're sitting at a desk and need to use both, how do you arrange them so using them both doesn’t kill your back? For context, I don’t have a desk since I usually work from bed, but sitting with my legs straight out in front of me hunched over my display and keyboard was hurting my legs and back, so I got two TV trays and an office chair and I’m using those. I have my Braille display and laptop both on one TV tray in front of me, with the Braille display in front of the laptop, but this means that if I need to use the laptop, I have to lean over my Braille display, so I’m still hurting my back. I’m working on my #BrailleTranscription course, so I have to use the laptop to type the exercises and drills. Also, I’m on a rug, so rolling the office chair between two TV trays isn’t an option. Is there anything I can do here to not hurt my back so much?

What are #Blind people expecting when there instant response to a fellow Assistive Technology user expressing a struggle with, disappointment in or even lack of accessibility in a website/service/app is “it works fine for me?”
I saw this behaviur again today and it pisses me off! If you’ve nothing useful to add or to ask, keep quiet. #Accessibility #Blind #Disability

To #blind #techies, does anyone have any suggestions for a pair of noise canceling #headphones purchasable on #Amazon that can connect to my computer running #Windows10, preferrably wirelessly or through Bluetooth. It's even better if they can somehow also connect to a second device and let me hear when my mom calls my #iPhone. This would be something I could use with my computer on days when our dogs are barking a lot so I don't get such bad #SensoryOverLoad. Of course, they need to also either not have software for the computer, or that software needs to be somewhat #accessible. My budget right now is about $80, but I may have up to $120 or so if I wait a day or two.

I want to talk about #accessibility in #gaming for a minute. I consider myself a gamer. I love finding #games I can play, and they're a great way to fill time stuck in bed or waiting at doctor appointments, but because of my multiple #disabilities, I'm more limited than some on what I can play. I've been mostly sticking to text-based games or games where sound isn't critical, but I want to try some #audiogames, and after I explain why I haven't, I'm hoping other #blind people can give me some suggestions.
Some of you might know that I'm both totally blind and #autistic. Because of my #autism, I can get easily overstimulated if a game has a lot of sound coming at me all at once. My sense of direction and where I am in space is also not very good, so I might get lost in games with complex maps. I don't mind that as long as there's no timer or anything like that. I also can't keep a mental map in my head. If a sound is supposed to be coming from a certain direction, there are a lot of times that I can't tell where that sound is coming from, even with headphones on, so I might misinterpret that cue. Finally, high-pitched sounds also worsen my chronic #headaches.
There are quite a few text-based games and others where sound isn't critical, but I know there are several great audiogames out there, too, and I'm just wondering which ones might be playable for me. As long as there aren't a bunch of sounds coming at me at once, too many high-pitched sounds, or a lot of directional sound cues, I think I could play it. Does anyone know of any games I might be missing out on?

Every time I pull out my BrailleNote Touch Plus, I'm reminded of how pitifully stagnated blindness-related products are compared to mainstream systems. Turns out I can no longer install Box because HumanWare has backed themselves into a corner and will not be updating past Android 8.1. This would not be a big deal... except for the fact that it's the only #Braille display I have at the moment, and literally every BRF file I need at Eastman is stored in Box.

I can't contact #Microsoft's #Disability helpdesk on #BeMyEyes. so what's happening is, when i tap on contact microsoft, the new intigrated #BeMyAI tries to help. and then, there is a call Microsoft button there in case the AI is unable to help. when I tapped on that button, it is not connecting to Microsoft, it is connecting me to a regular sighted volunteer. #Blind #Blindness #Accessibility

Blazie's new BTSpeak or Orbit's new OrbitSpeak, which device will ultimately succeed? That is the question... #accessibility #blind #Braille

Hi everyone. Hope all is well. Just thought I would post an audio recording of me going through some sounds of my Nord Stage 4 I have in my studio. These are sounds I customized from the factory and sounds I didn’t do much tweaking on, except for EQ here and there. HOpe you enjoy!

The universe has cried and Kostyantin, the dev behind Whatsapp+ and Unigram+ NVDA addons, has delivered: Github-Release-Downloader, a NVDA addon that will happily download the latest release of any Github repo you throw at it. It's quite rudimentary at the moment i.e. we need to enter the URL manually, it can't handle multiple asset files etc. but I was just able to download some NVDA addons just fine. It's definitely a start.

If you like this one and would like to support the dev, all the info you need is at https://t.me/unigramplus. Thanks, Kostya, and greetings to Ukraine! #NVDASR #Accessibility #Blind

Edit2: Solved! Thanks everyone!
#Blind #Microsoft #excel users and others who, for whatever reason, only use the keyboard, NOT THE MOUSE: How the hell do I tell Excell to continue a pattern in a column without selecting it and clicking on the bottom left side of the screen or whatever?
Let's say I have a column with 1 in A1, 2 in A2, 3 in A3, so forth, and want that to go on for 150 cells or so. How the hell do I do it? Because I know I used to know, but I cannot find it.
It's not control+d. That just fills the whole column with 1's. It's not copy-paste; that does adjust properly for formulas, but for this, it doesn't. There is surely an option somewhere in the menus, but I cannot find it.
Alternatively, I'd also be happy to learn of ways to do this in #OpenOffice #Calc, so long as they are keyboard-only and accessible. LibreOffice doesn't work all that well here, at least Writer doesn't, but I could double-check if that extends to other programs.
#AskFedi #AskMastodon #ScreemReader

Edit: a couple folks suggested using formulas for this, adding so the first cell would be 1, the second A1 +1, etc. That works quite well for most use cases! It would mean the order of the numbers would stay the same when reordering the table though, so if I was using this to autocomplete a list of years, then sold by the comumn Income ... bam, the income of each year's not right anymore.
Also suggested was Home>Fill>Series. I do not see a Series option in the Fill menu at all, Bewilderingly. I'll try to switch my language to English to see if that's the issue, but I pressed all the things, so pretty sure it's not there for me in Office 365. Could someone with that version check whether it works for them?
Edit2: I figured out how to get to the series option! Turns out it was there, I just didn't realise I had to select the right type of series. :ms_facepalm: For those curious, for the Slovenian version, that's Alt +N, FI, V, Enter.

So I wrote a blog post for the first time in 5 years, warning about hcaptcha's accessibility account. Long story short, they banned me from the accessibility account because I'm not blind. I'm sure everyone who wants to know about this already does but, just in case anyone has, particularly if #blind or #DeafBlind, been looking for a local method of converting speech to text ... Whisper is an ML model from OpenAI which allows doing that. It can be used accessibly with all screen readers on Windows. Obviously, this is great for those of us with impaired hearing, it is certainly far more accurate than any of the speech to text programs I've seen, needs no training, and can handle background noise quite well. The audio duration limits are set by your hard drive space and the amount of time you're willing to put into transcription, I've transcribed several hours of audio without difficulty, it just takes time. It's available on Windows using https://github.com/Softcatala/whisper-ctranslate2 which just seems to need python. A GPU makes it faster, but it's usable on an I5 CPU. The model is also available online at https://freesubtitles.ai though that requires payment or waiting for long periods to transcribe limited amounts of audio. Thanks to @Bryn@mindly.social for the pointer at whisper-ctranslate2. #whisper #SpeechToText
