Signal is working on the ability to set nicknames and add notes to contacts! Notes and nicknames will only be visible to you and will be end-to-end encrypted.

This feature is currently available in Signal for Android v7.2, but it will likely come to other platforms soon. Please note that this feature is currently under active development, so its design and functionality are subject to change.

C'est cool de pouvoir choisir plusieurs manières pour les gens de vous contacter: nom d'utilisateur, URL ou QR code.

Et le réglage de la confidentialité du numéro de téléphone (séparé) est bien :

Yes I have recurring donation to them. Yes, I'm trying to keep calm, but damn it, this is ridiculous that Signal is still this much behind the market. Stability, quality, features, design, using phone number,... . Come on!

Exposing my DID and then farming my contact database so it can tell me when people I know sign up for #Signal (and Vice Verse - it tells people who have your DID in their contact database when you're a signal user too) is an egregious invasion of my privacy!!!

I do understand that Signal has been working to get rid of the #DID requirement, and received notification of such a day or so ago, but there's still a bad taste left in my mouth for encroachments.

The next beta version of #Signal will be version 7.0.0.
There's a good reason for the round number. This will be the first version where usernames and phone number privacy are available outside of the staging environment.
From this version on, you'll be able to talk to people on Signal without revealing your phone number, and also, you may use Signal without revealing to people who have your number saved that you do.
This is huge.

Today, two open letters from academics on the scientific arguments against the current #CSS (client side scanning) initiatives have been released:

* The first (in English, internationally coordinated) one is online at https://tinyurl.com/CSAScientistsLetter and still open for additional signatures.

* The second (in German, by #Austrian academics) one is online at https://www.ins.jku.at/chatcontrol/ and explicitly includes law experts in addition to the arguments from a security, privacy, and AI perspective.

This debate is expected to gain new steam with #Spain taking over the EU council presidency, given recently leaked statements like "Ideally, in our view, it would be desirable to legislatively prevent EU-based service providers from implementing end-to-end encryption" (https://www.wired.co.uk/article/europe-break-encryption-leaked-document-csa-law).
