I encountered a weird setup that a lot of Komplete Kontrol libraries don't play the preview when browsing presets. The presets load fine, but they just don't play the previews. The preview feature is on, and some libraries do play the preview. Is there a fix without redownloading all the libraries with the problems? @FreakyFwoof
Nothing to do with the libraries themselves. That's probably the stupid out-dated NBPL library getting out of sync. Mine also does that, even though it's installed and in the correct place. I haven't been bothered to delete and redownload it. It's the Native Preview library in Native Access. I bet the libraries that don't play are all the old NI libraries. Abbey Road drums, Scarbee libraries etc, etc. Anything pre-2018.
I would, I just don't care enough. It's only a few libraries and I don't use them much anyway, and it will probably break again at some other point anyway.
If you show hidden files and find that the particular library has a .previews folder in the instruments or snapshots folders and doesn't play, that's more of a problem.
It breaks for a lot of people which is why I just gave up trying to keep it fixed. It's 7 gig and I have a slow connection and it's one of those which I just bet will fail installing on Mac because it's an ISO file not DMG. ISO and Mac currently don't go together so don't expect it to work.
Loads of the older libraries are .ISO so if you have to ever reinstall them, it's a bit of a nightmare to do so. I did make a demo explaining how, but it's not for the faint hearted.

@Lprazdnik ahaha I wish! There's a lot of manual refactoring. But what's nice is, I can do my real job while I work and the AI codes something in the background, pause, then get back to it again. What's funny is also using the same AI at work and home to do tasks. Man this world is nuts, should catch up sometime again.
All I ever do in life is mess up phonemes. Maybe no SpeechPlayer updates for a bit until I can solve them. Feeling sad and disheartened. This is never going to work out, formant synthesis is too impossible. Back to work things.
Maybe you think you're messing up because you're trying to do it by yourself, but have you tried looking up papers on phonetics and how formants should be done?
@GoemonIshikawa what gets really hard is that each engine is tuned slightly differently, so even if I could find papers, it might help me better understand the math and relations between all the PF1 to PF6 and CF1 to CF6 + nasal qualities and how they really impact the sound, but it wouldn't give me a magical answer of, "tune this phoneme this way for it to sound good." That tends to just happen by ear and lots of manual, human-assisted tuning.
@GoemonIshikawa hm. I think because formants are resonances of a moving filter, not tones being played. So unlike pitch, formants are broad peaks, not single frequencies, and they overlap too. A vowel isn’t "F1 = 500 Hz" It’s more like "F1 starts at ~650, slides to ~500, widens, then narrows again". A tuner would hate that. So I think it just …is physically different every time, because the tongue is already moving toward the next sound before the current one finishes. And that's what formants try to sort of replicate, but with math.
Man, you're doing something insanely difficult and beating yourself up every time you have a setback. It makes me very sad to see. Remember, you're not obligated and you've done a whole lot in a very short period of time! It's ok if you slow down and live life a bit.

I think I'm stuck on the wheel because people do write in with feedback and suggestions so then I'm like, "wow, what a great suggestion, let's jump right on seeing if we can fix it!" LOL. If I just had the project sitting here by myself that's a different story, but of course that type of feedback is what also makes things essential for tuning, so it's unavoidable.

This question partly motivated by a discussion I was having with someone about "where would one actually advertise?" in relation to the drop in my own business.
THe Tailwind folks are complaining about it on their site (they used it to advertise paid Tailwind features, so it's a significant drop in revenue for them).
This is probably more of a problem for them than for anybody else (LLMs can and do look at docs, but they're effectively "ad blockers" and only give you the information you actually want / need, not what the website owner wants you to see). No idea what the impact is on other sites.
@miki It's not just that LLMs are "ad blockers", but they also seem to strip citations and related work. So for instance, if I had previous put out something interesting like a conference tutorial on some topic, that no longer gets seen (or linked) either.
Yeah, for better and for worse, they give the user exactly what they want, no more and no less. Some consider this as a walled garden, others as a natural extension of fast forward, ad blocking and reader mode. I guess it depends on where you fall on the scale of author's rights versus reader's rights.
Though to be fair, I suspect that many authors will leverage this and find a way to speak to LLMs directly. With enough prompt engineering, you could probably convince an LLM reading your website to tell the user about something you care about. The line between jailbreaking and telling the user something they want to hear is blurry, just like the line between delivering genuinely useful commercial information and manipulation is blurry in advertising. It's a strange world we live in.
What is the anti-AI endgame at this point? It feels like everyone who's anti-AI is just praying for the bubble to burst. Like do you think when it happens that OpenAI is just going to close their doors and say "well we had a good run but lets close it down?" No! What's going to happen is what happens every time a bubble bursts and any smaller AI companies will go under or be absorbed by the few remaining ones and we'll just be left with 2 or 3 companies that control everything, and instead of fostering alternatives and trying to keep up with and help contribute to open stacks that can't be locked behind paywalls, the vast majority of the open-source community has just decided to complain about things changing and hope it doesn't.

One of the trickier things in software is gradual degradation. Development that happens in the wrong direction slowly over time which never triggers any alarms or upset users.
Oh here, while I'm in the ranting phase anyway. Why I hate that even my favorite artists, even if it's just Techno, put out music including AI generated elements. Because music is deeply connected to emotions for me. Can't have music without emotions, at least it would suck and be dry, and for my case, can't live without music either. Whatever music that is, Worship, Metal, Techno. I listen to a lot and it's one of the few things I can, kinda fall into and just let my feelings be with, or use it to drown the feelings away. That giving up of authority may be worth doing with something with a physical appearance, like a broken leg or something with an objective basis, like a flood in your house, but, as has been proved over the past 25 or so years, psychology and psychiatry are just messy opinions pretending to be sciences. Whatever you like to call it, if your life doesn't suit you, either wait until you can change it or change it to the best of your ability right now. The world is full of people living lives which don't suit them, sometimes they can get out, sometimes they can't. In the vast majority of cases, people actually can make the changes but don't want to make the sacrifices or don't have the courage. In the minority of cases, and by minority I mean over all but the majority of people with disabilities, the ideal life is not really available and it is for us who are religious to endure. Even in that minority, though, changing some things is usually just very hard and takes time, it's not impossible. It can do no harm to think about what an ideal life would be like and about how getting there might be possible. If it's not possible, then it isn't, but in my own experience, both for myself and talking to others, minor improvements are almost always possible and the chance for major ones is rarely completely gone.

actually it looks like they might allow for wave hooking without a wrapper so it may be doable more so than Rozmowy, that Polish synth, or Mindmaker Flexvoice 2. Not knowing DLL signatures directly is a huge challenge though with these things always, so can't make promises, but doesn't look bad on the surface scan.
looks like this is a SAPI4 synth. CyberTalk is not a “call these exported functions to speak” style engine. It’s a Microsoft Speech API 4 (SAPI4) Text-To-Speech engine implemented as a COM in-proc server (TTSAPI.DLL exports DllGetClassObject, DllCanUnloadNow, etc.), and the STLTTS.EXE piece looks like the engine’s helper/server side that the DLL talks to. Sigh. So this may have to stay as a SAPI4 engine, because writing that glue for inter-DLL communication and hooking wave in COM DLLS doesn't work the same. But it's possible to change the .reg file and have it speak, I think.

Last night, I had a #weirdDream about a new product announced at NAMM, called the Absorbian. It was basically this dense, compact cube that had two handles you pulled apart, and it expanded into about a 8x8x8 block that completely absorbed any sound around it. Perfect for recording clean vocals in a busy industrial wearhouse, but small enough when folded that you could easily carry it in a purse. It was hollow in the middle, so you put whatever you wanted isolated inside the cube once expanded.

There is a surprising inconsistency with how columns are represented in spreadsheets I have never thought about. There is A, B, ..., Z, AA, AB, ..., BA, ...; if we assume that column indexes start from 0 (like rows), then A = AA = AAA etc.
That's clearly incorrect, so the table rows must be indexed from 0 while table columns are indexed from 1, right? No! If A=1, then Z=27, so AA=28, but we've already determined, that A stands for 1, so AA is basically 28 + 1. Ergo, column labels in spreadsheets are not indexes and they are pure nonsense. QED. :)
