Except there’s no new realization here. Carney gave a version of this speech every day during the election: ie, Canada’s old relationship with the US is over. And his government’s actions *even over the past two weeks* go against his analysis, esp the go along to get along part (Eg, Grok/CSAM).
More than new trade agreements (a Canadian fetish since the Chrétien days), Canadian businesses need active support from federal trade officials to break into *existing* markets. They need much better data on our own local economies. Yet Carney’s slashing government instead.
Carney’s AI strategy pretends that you can still work with Microsoft and Palantir(!) and call it a sovereign cloud. You simply can’t.
The CFIA knows that the US gutting of their regulatory agencies means it’ll be more work for them to keep Canadians safe. They can’t do that under austerity.
My skepticism regarding Carney’s speech is rooted in the observation that he’s failed to do the small things that would signal resolve to actually move away from the US, particularly expanding regulatory & statistical capacity. Instead, he’s actually doing the opposite. Is he going to reverse that?

I’m not saying anything like ”Carney’s selling us out.” Rather that he’s consistently followed a strategy that’s at odds with his rhetoric. He’s promising transformative change while his actual actions are far more conservative.
I lay this argument out here.
