Peanut butter is an intergenerational prank gone wrong. Parents decided to tease their children by feeding it to them ("Look what they're eating!") and were too amused to stop doing it. By the time they were planning to confess ("No, it's not food, silly.") it was too late and the children had got accustomed to the eldritch horror. With its beginnings lost in time immemorial, subsequent generations of parents continue to spread the practice without realising the horrifying consequences.
