@libreoffice

Hey, folks.

I love using Libre Office and have been for years. I write all my books with it. I believe you're leagues better than the MS version.

So why, oh why has Writer lost the ability to remember the last cursor position?

It's beyond annoying, especially when editing a 250 page document. This is one of the most important functions, to be able to continue where you stopped - why is it even broken?

Why has it been broken for so long?

Hi! Without more details (LibreOffice version, operating system, document format etc.) it's hard to say what the problem could be. If you're using LibreOffice's native format (OpenDocument) then it should work.

Hi again! Since the update from which version? Can you try on LibreOffice 7.4.5? We can't reproduce here (it works with .odt files), but maybe there's something else at play. If it's still an issue on your system with 7.4.5, you could try Safe Mode (under the Help menu).

Hello LibreOfficers, I notice the same behaviour in Writer. Linux 64-bit, version 7.3.7.2, and only in spreadsheets the cursor (cell pointer) is saved.
ODT files consistently open at the top of page 1.
I'll see if the latest and greatest does better.

@paulkater Throwing bricks at volunteers isn't the best idea 😉 Something is clearly wrong, but we can't reproduce it here (LibreOffice 7.5.0.3, with various .odt docs). To get a solution, have a look at bugs.documentfoundation.org to see if someone is reporting a similar issue, or create a new one, for the QA community to investigate. Thanks!

LO 7.5 displays the same behaviour, even with a new file created in 7.5.
Saved with cursor on page 3. Reopened, cursor is at the top of page 1. Fascinating. Can we throw a brick at something to fix this? ;-)

😂 Not going to throw bricks at hard working people! No worries. Thanks for the link, I'll have a look if someone reported something similar.
I'll give this a try on a few other computers too. Maybe some config thingy is off somewhere.

I understood this is a document specific feature meaning you have to go to the properties window to save the cursor position to every file you are working with. libreofficehelp.com/how-to-sav…
in reply to Peter Vágner

@pvagner @paulkater You shouldn't have to do that for every file. I'm running LibreOffice 7.5.0.3 here, and even when I create a new .odt file with many pages, save it and reopen it, the position is correct (without doing anything else). I know "it works for me" isn't the most helpful answer, so let's try to get to the bottom of this...
in reply to LibreOffice

@LibreOffice @Paul @Hannah Steenbock I assume it's saved in the file metadata. Thus for every file that does not save its cursor position I need to reset the properties. I believe it's similar to how number of printings and other statistics is saved with each file.
in reply to LibreOffice

@pvagner I installed 7.5 on a windows machine this morning and fully reset the profile. That took care of the problem for me.

For some odd reason it does NOT work for @Firlefanz. Could there be something in an old config file or registry setting that makes things go belly up?
