I've never understood the difference between an option and a setting. Do you set an option? is there a difference?

I mean aside from your general context of options being more of a main menu, the use of the words generally are pretty interchangeable

It's a good question. Truth be told, not all options are settings. As an example, some options are available to only convey information, such as options to speak the time, date, battery status, product info, etc. One option is the file browser. This allows you to browse, create, rename, delete, translate and convert files.

is there a reason you called it options as a root menu? I'd have thought main menu had a great retro feel within the blind community.

Calling the BT Speak's primary menu the options menu might have a retro feel for many blind consumers, as the Braille 'n Speak and other legacy products from Blazie Engineering also assigned O-chord to open an Options menu.
