The matrix.org homeserver has been struggling with load over the last 24h (thanks perhaps to Slack for driving users our way: arstechnica.com/tech-policy/20…) - we're working on fixing performance. Folks on other homeservers are of course unaffected. Apologies for the inconvenience. status.matrix.org is tracking the incident.

Glad that one server being hammered doesn't take down the whole network. hooray for decentralization. All the more reason to stand up my own homeserver once conduit becomes stable

Do you have any numbers regarding the current active users and number of new signups?

Anyone wanting a quick bang-bang, point DNS, you have a personal matrix server for pennies/hr check out elest.io/

You get 48hrs of starter time to try out the host.

You should push users towards picking from a list of servers instead of immediately allowing them to make their account on matrix.org.

Is the matrix.org homeserver a single server? can it not be lots of little servers with a central message bus? I have a bunch of #synapse worker nodes in containers spread across servers with #redis ?, I think, between them. I do realise that my little setup with just me isn't quite the same #matrix

We've rolled out perf improvements as of 16:15 UTC and things look to be recovering. Sorry for the disruption.

Does this mean letting people know about other homeservers so Matrix isn't so centralized?

congrats to the fix. Will there be something like a post mortem on what you did to fix it? Maybe other HS Admins can benefit from it :)

The cynic in me wants to mention that each time matrix.org instance has issues my little invitation-only homeserver gains another user. So... Degradation is good for decentralization? :blobfoxmlem:

doesn't help with all the clients now being in a broken and inconsistent state
