I bet you do this kind of thing a lot - half the web seems to made up of stuff that was built by looking at what other things were doing, not by looking at the specs (for prior examples, see RS-232 devices back in the day).
The robustness principle, often phrased as "be conservative in what you send,
and liberal in what you accept", has long guided the design and implementation
of Internet protocols.
