a good ol' "scream test": disable a service and listen. If there's no screams, it would seem it was not in use.

hmm, I’ve never used curl for /any/ ftp, in fact I haven’t touched anything *ftp since forever ;p I did have one use case for kerberos to interact with a kerberized Hadoop, in another lifetime, but that part seems to be untouched, I no longer use that though. It’s good to drop dead weight :)
