The HTTP QUERY Method proposal is still alive. Draft 8 just dropped:

This specification defines a new HTTP method, QUERY, as a safe, idempotent request method that can carry request content.

TIL about that. Sounds nice, especially the caching part which is in my experience the only downside to the POST workaround.

I think #curl needs a few minor tweaks to support this really well...
