why not using the SOA negative value to decide for how long to cache? (by default, with possibility to override if really needed)

Yes, but application could do an explicit SOA query after to get that answer. Debatable, I agree. And other APIs provide that info. (ex: getdnsapi where "replies_tree" has both the "answer" and the "authority" part of the reply)

@pmevzek that's a library we don't use and a separate DNS request is error prone. IOW: not practical
