"Nah, surely someone else will sponsor the project. We certainly don't want to. We never did. It's still here and works well after decades, which proves us right."
Which engine is using it? Not sure the devs actually know their engine’s dependencies.
Also, yeah sure AAA games should spent some money on underlying libs. But most games are from very small team that die after their first game launch :(
I'm part of a startup that will rely heavily on a few open source products. It's built into all financial calculations that we will not only sponsor upstream, but actually mention doing so when describing the product.
I can only hope those products in turn sponsor their upstreams though :/
In almost every company, there are people trying to fight to get their management to give money to open source projects. Or to let them contribute to open source projects. Management nearly always says no. Corporations can't easily use Ko-Fi donate buttons. They need invoices and paper work. Management can't done directing company effort at improving tools that won't affect the bottom line.
Make it easier for developers to convince management.
@fazalmajid we list sponsors here: curl.se/sponsors.html but I also have paying customers that include Microsoft, HP, Roblox and some lesser known names
I’m actually curious on why game engines user cURL in the first place? For Multiplayer features most likely not. My first guess would be for online lobby and chat stuff? But I’m totally unaware from that kind of business.
Well that, or that they need to track and transfer every interaction of the user to generate more and better dark patterns and hype up some KPIs in some corporate meeting rooms… BUT!!!! No metric they will ever collect will show them how much time and money and stress they have saved by relying on one of the most important free to use and open source based software stacks they could have chosen. Therefore: they won’t support you with a dime… 😢

And they're right. The can and are legally allowed to.
