This is a general problem of scaling and it's mostly about data transfer/storage.

Cloud has a poor unit cost at small scale. Small instance owners pay 100x the amount of large ones per transferred/stored GB.

But once the celebrities join, you can exit the cloud and cut the cost. 37signals cloud exit is an awesome scaling case study for this.
