So it looks like @protonprivacy made their Proton Mail app proprietary – or do I miss something? On the PlayStore there's a v4.0.6, while the Github repo at https://github.com/ProtonMail/proton-mail-android didn't see any commit since last October, and has v3.0.17 as latest release.

I hope I'm wrong here and just missed a note that you moved the repo to e.g. Codeberg or so?

The Proton #Mail app i installed from the google play store 2 days ago on my new phone shows version 3.0.16 (938)
Now i joined the Beta group, lets wait and see which version pops up there.

now i get 4.0.6 after adding me to #Beta

@smartwater Looking at the detais at Appbrain, it's clearly 4.0.6 – or we're talking about a different app. But it says "ch.protonmail.android" which is what's currently in my repo as well. And the changelog there says 4.x was released 2024-02-29 – but the Github repo has no new code. @protonprivacy

@smartwater Aurora is showing me 3.0.16. I wonder if they are developing the beta behind closed doors and are going to dump the code on GitHub later.

Proton recently got a new Android app into their Betas, rewritten in Kotlin+Compose

This one has a bumped version number, but I didn't think it's in production yet 🤔
Either way I don't think they maliciously and suddenly made Proton Mail on Android proprietary but rather haven't pushed the new changes yet.

Inside the app, does it say anything about its license? Most FOSS licenses require that.

It does look like Proton has gone back on its promise to make its Android app for Proton Mail open source.

@protonprivacy Looking forward to your response.

Note that we open source our apps once they are fully released. The new rewritten Proton Mail Android has not yet been made available to all the users. However, this will happen very soon.

Thanks for clarification! (Might be a good idea to have that in the Readme of the repo 😉)

I assume the answer to my question I've sent by mail several weeks ago (concerning per-ABI builds, as the "fat build" exceeds the allowed per-app size in my repo almost by factor 3) will come soon then as well? With multiple downloads/installs *per hour* according to the logs I guess you'd like me to keep the app available there, and your customers happy 😉
