I'd like to see less criticism of how Bluesky isn't really decentralized, why it sucks that the Bluesky app uses React (I regret that I briefly piled onto that one), etc., and more discussion of why we're losing people to Bluesky and what we're going to do about it. For my part, I'm trying not to be a toxic reply guy.

What do you think the reasons are? To me it seems to boil down to wanting the benefits of community and decentralization without the work of community-building or the drawbacks of decentralization. I don't think there's a way to counter that because I think bluesky can't deliver what it's promising.

This thread is illustrative — @coffeegeek creates original, high-production value content and really wants to be active on fedi but almost can’t despite a significant investment in time/$$

I don't think we're really losing people that much more than would be expected when there's a new bandwagon to jump on. Not to Bluesky in particular anyway, I think not being able to retain more of the previous waves of people who came here happened way before Bluesky became a thing and Bluesky has historically even suffered from the exact same thing so it isn't wise to imagine it is some perfect version of this even though it is currently gaining traction just like Mastodon did before it.

That said, certainly there's reason to look at what Bluesky does do well and what could be done on fediverse platforms to make the experience better. I'm excited to see the #FetchAllReplies effort looking like it will fix one problem that has existed for a long time.

The first problem is that Mastodon isn't one place. You can go to Bluesky and make a Bluesky account.
But for Mastodon, they say "the first thing to do is to pick a server." Well, what servers can I pick from? "There are lots, look around..."
So people go to the one site they can sign up and be done, rather than do research (how much? Who knows?) to find sites (which probably are invitation-only anyway, and could be defederated from the others) before they can even sign up.

We're not losing anybody. It just looks like the good old Twitter to them, and there is still considerable time left until it turns out it isn't that.

To join the Fediverse, some fundamental insights and some commitment are required, which just aren't there as long as a shiny alternative is available that looks, at first sight, exactly like what you are looking for.

I understand how they get that impression, and I'm not mad or angry about it, at all.

@spaduf

I just wish bridging via Fedibridge was standard. Then I wouldn’t have to still open multiple apps.
