Signal is working on the ability to set nicknames and add notes to contacts! Notes and nicknames will only be visible to you and will be end-to-end encrypted.

This feature is currently available in Signal for Android v7.2, but it will likely come to other platforms soon. Please note that this feature is currently under active development, so its design and functionality are subject to change.

Two screenshots of the upcoming nicknames and notes feature in Signal. The left screenshot shows the screen where you can edit the nickname and note for a contact. The top of the page says "Nickname" followed by, "Nicknames are stored using Signal's end-to-end encrypted storage service. They are only visible to you." Then, it shows a user's profile picture. Underneath are three input boxes titled "First name", "Last name", and "Note". The right screenshot shows the bottom sheet for a contact when tapping on their profile. It shows the updated contact nickname and their note.
