If you've ever found yourself missing the "good old days" of the #web, what is it that you miss? (Interpret "it" broadly: specific websites? types of activities? feelings? etc.) And approximately when were those good old days?

No wrong answers — I'm working on an article and wanted to get some outside thoughts.

Can I mention the Internet prior to the Web's becoming widespread?I miss Usenet News, for example, of the mid 90s - composed largely of representatives of universities, research institutions, technology companies, etc., which presumably accounts for the quality of some of the discussions. There was little need to be concerned about spam or other forms of blatant abuse, or about corporate dominance. The system was truly decentralized. On the other hand, Usenet is where the term "flame war" originated, or at least became prominent, so it wasn't as civil a discourse as the more positive memories would suggest, and I'm sure there were people who felt excluded... It was good in some ways, but not ideal.

Websites about niche topics, where some random person would give you their idiosyncratic and often very interesting view on something. Forums. Discovering new things. I'd say from 99 to maybe 2015?
