Note: "Web deisgner" here means engaged in designing or producing websites in any significant fashion. I'm trying to distinguish viewpoints of designers vs. users here, if any

It is 18 months since I joined @Mastodon! So it's probably time for a little #.

My feed has become an open # where I share things I # and #, from specialised to personal # and # - and sometimes my own #.

I am interested in the # # and its #, # transfer and #, as well as #, # and # and how they all intersect with #.

📰 Looking forward to # your complementary or opposite views!

OPEN SOURCE, EXPERIMENTAL, AND TINY TOOLS ROUNDUP

https://tinytools.directory/

"This is a list of small, free, or experimental tools that might be useful in building your game / website / interactive project. Although I’ve included ‘standards’, this list has a focus on artful tools and toys that are as fun to use as they are functional.

The goal of this list is to enable making entirely outside of closed production ecosystems or walled software gardens."

Activists rally to save Internet Archive as a lawsuit from publishers threaten to shut it down https://decrypt.co/31906/activists-rally-save-internet-archive-lawsuit-threatens

If people are smart, it's time to archive the Archive right now. In other words, fork it and turn it unto a decentralized platform. I hope someone out there is working on that.

Plus you have to think libraries need some decentralization as well as this lawsuit could kill libraries as we know them.

BULLETIN: A federal judge has set a tentative trial hearing date of Big Publishing's lawsuit against the Internet Archive on November 2021. http://blog.archive.org/2020/09/03/judge-sets-tentative-trial-date-for-november-2021/

# # Hi, I'm Marco from Hamburg, Germany. I was born in 1973, so have been wandering this Earth for a while. My interests include #, # in both novel and TV show form, mostly #, but open to anything new and exciting. I'm also interested in #, #, # topics, #. I work on and for the open #, # and #. And I tinker and test stuff. Apps, web sites, etc.

I need a server OS that basically maintains itself (automatic updates… ideally automatic rollback on failure but at least manual rollback support).

So I’m looking into Fedora CoreOS but very few VPS hosts seem to support it (wish Hetzner did… that would be ideal for me).

The other one I’m considering is OpenSuse MicroOS.

Any other suggestions? Ideally ones supported by at least one VPS provider with speedy instance setup + an API.

Buenas, gurizada! Corneteio de Porto Alegre, no Rio Grande do Sul. Trabalho com programação para Web, em especial com # e #. Procuro compartilhar na rede assuntos de meu interesse: # # # # # e #. #

So, my first #
# # poll has ended. the results are here: https://mastodon.social/@Unatributed/108450137107624580

Unfortunately not a lot of respondents, but the ~60/40 split was enough to get me to install vivaldi.

Unfortuantely I won't be sticking with it. Why? My main reason for installing it was the new mail client, which reminded me of the old # and # browsers. Alas, the mail client doesn't work the way I need it to, and there are lots of forum posts about problems with it...

Ah, so delightfully optimised for people farming you’d almost think Google wrote it!

Also, they have no funding insofar as I can see. We basically need to fund what they’re doing from the commons. Hopefully with a charter that also cares about accessibility, etc. Perhaps one that adopts the ethical design manifesto (https://ind.ie/ethical-design)

Unfortunately, Firefox is the best browser you’re going to get under capitalism/Silicon Valley.

Thankfully, we can do so much better than capitalism/Silicon Valley.

If we want a browser owned and controlled by the people, we must fund an organisation owned and controlled by the people to build and maintain it. (So, for example, an independent org funded by our taxes.)

And, hey, they don’t even have to start from scratch. They can, for example, fork Firefox. ;)

What would Firefox be if it was private by default?

It would be LibreWolf.

Great article about issues in # and web development.

I face the same as the author, also as user and developer.

We need to stop this hell that is going on. Every one of us web developers has responsibilities to stop this.

Content warning: If you’re using Helix Editor with multiple versions of Node…

Linux life hack: say you have a page open in Firefox on your Linux machine and you want to view it on your phone (and you don’t have some fancy integration between the two)…

Instead of typing in the URL, get the FxQRL extension that shows you a QR code of the current tab’s URL and aim your phone’s camera at it.

Boom! :)

Screenshot of my Mastodon page with its QR code showing from the extension mentioned in the post.

So the hyperspace “page” transition effect on Federico Dossena’s web site is bellissimo :)

(Warning: there is a white flash during the transition so perhaps avoid if you have photosensitive epilepsy, etc.)

Clean up the web!

A reminder that you, as a developer, can make a difference on the Web simply by choosing not to perpetuate people farming on your own sites and apps.

Hey # fediverse, anybody can recommend an (ethical, ideally) alternative to Google Trends?

I am not talking, necessarily, about trends measured by search volume. It's entirely fine if they are measured in some other way, like "how often this term shows up on different websites" or such.

Basically, I need to see long-term trends for popularity of specified terms on the web.

👴 OK kids...

Before #, before #, before the #, we had the #.

If you wanna learn from those who came before, here's a comprehensive 5-hour # about bulletin board systems. 🤓

(Of course, given the world back then it's mostly 5 hours of old white guys. So it goes!)
