To be clear: They didn’t just reject an update. They outright removed the app entirely. Otherwise my plan B would have been to remove the contacts permission which is used to display the name and profile picture locally if the XMPP address matches an entry in the users address book.
If Google Play accepted source code for their review process, then they could be a lot more accurate. Seems crazy that they don't even offer it as an option.
Has something been added by you, connected to the way contact lists work? Or has Google changed something so the same source code part does not pass their automated tests anymore?
They did they exact same thing to our messaging app at $work, for the exact same reason.
We know for a fact we don't upload the user's contacts anywhere (and the infra is self-hosted anyway, even if we did).
We couldn't get them to accept this fact and were only able to be reinstated by adding a note to our privacy policy about _why_ we upload them (we still don't actually upload any contacts).
Did you see this comment? Does that mean that it's possible to change the privacy policy or remove the permission? I do not know what you can do after an app is removed. https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=39369993
How is this possible? There are many apps that steal the contact list, and one that does NOT is removed for such case. That seems very intentional… Very sad

They're treating all apps the same, right?

So it should be clear, the contacts upload is a lie.
Maybe it is political pressure against self hosted chat services.
