you know, i really want to like #matrix. i really do. in fact, it's the only group orient IM i use. but it's lack of decent mod tools is pathetic.

communities are being harassed with #csam and #vore and they can't do anything about it. i'm actually ashamed that i recommend it to people.

this isn't new, and they've lost huge communities to it. i'm actually fucking pissed. this should be number one priority, no excuses.

do something

Thank you, we agree that the current state is not good and needs to change.

We are prioritizing Trust & Safety work this year, with improvements specific to Matrix.org homeserver as well as new FOSS moderation tooling for the benefit of all homeserver admins. We'll be sharing more about this on our blog within the next month or so.

Of note, we're also looking at forging partnerships with community members who spend a lot of time thinking and working in this space.

Our team is small and funding is meager, so we are moving as fast as we can – and do very much wish we could move faster. One way to do that is by collaborating with trusted people who are already volunteering in the space.

Addressing this issue well is key to our collective long term success. Thank you for being vocal about it!

i appreciate the response, and look forward to seeing what develops in the coming months.

sorry about my frustrated tone yesterday, but obviously it's quite jarring to check a community room and be blasted with csam

i understand that @josh takes it seriously, so that gives me some hope.

is there a roadmap of planned features relevant to this that users can follow? i'd be keen on seeing whats steps you're planning on taking

We don't have a fully public roadmap yet but we're getting there!

We just launched a series of blog posts to explore that, and there will be a dedicated Trust & Safety installment as part of that series: https://matrix.org/blog/2024/01/2024-roadmap-and-fundraiser/

Maybe it should be thought about to reduce the dominant role of matrix.org as a matrix instance?

It would spread the moderation work across a broader community, like we do it here in the fediverse too.

in reply to Stanford

@stanford We will be taking an all of the above approach to addressing the issue – it does need to be addressed systematically for the whole open federation, and Matrix.org also needs improvement.

We are committed to decentering Matrix.org. We will maintain the server to ease adoption for new users, but plan to prominently feature _other_ homeservers for users to join, and invest in account migration tools and account portability among other things.
