Thunderbird 115 "Supernova" launches on Monday, July 10th! It's our first step towards a more modern, more beautiful, and more customizable Thunderbird experience.

We think you're going to love it, and we are endlessly grateful for all of your support throughout the years 💙

ooo, is that dark mode for e-mails themselves where possible? I sure hope it is!
in reply to Bjornsdottirs

@ellenor2000 It might cause some headaches for some people (there definitely will be some very angry loud (minority)), but as far as I know, the most controversal UI changes (density, unified folders etc.) can be reverted in settings, because the Thunderbird team actually listens to user feedback (unlike some big companies).
in reply to YMSTNT

@ymstnt @ellenor2000 Indeed. in fact, we're not even defaulting to the view you see in these screenshots. So it should still feel very comfortable to people who are used to the existing layouts.
in reply to Thunderbird: Free Your Inbox

great so early. I'm excited from the beta test already. The new design is nice and much cleaner 👍
in reply to Thunderbird: Free Your Inbox

Oh, this looks nice. I may give it a try again. Hopefully the usability got improved too. In my humble opinion #thunderbird is/was way too messed up/complicated to deal with. Email should be as simple as possible nowadays ... :-)
in reply to Thunderbird: Free Your Inbox

I can't wait to test it!

It will certainly take some time to get used to after all this time, but it is awesome to see a Thunderbird that fits the 2020's 😍

in reply to Rémi Dupré

@remidupre The best thing is, you can still use the traditional wide view and "table" layout you're used to, if you want!
in reply to Thunderbird: Free Your Inbox

congrats! Have you considered JMAP support in future? There’s some solid rust code out there already https://github.com/stalwartlabs/jmap-client for example
in reply to Thunderbird: Free Your Inbox

Looks fabolous, Monday couldn't come sooner (though I wouldn't skip the weekend, I need some rest :bloblaugh: ).

Looks like the e-mail dark mode is built in now? Is this correct? Does that mean I can finally ditch Dark Reader?

in reply to Thunderbird: Free Your Inbox

It's my birthday, so thx for this gift. I am very excited about what I have been able to see so far. 👍👍👍
in reply to Thunderbird: Free Your Inbox

well done, it really looks modern and good. I hope it hit the Linux repos (Arch btw) a.s.a.p .
in reply to Thunderbird: Free Your Inbox

can't wait to see which extensions will stop working - since that wouldn't be something I mind as I am just so thankful for all the refactoring that needed to happen to make this possible 🥰
in reply to Thunderbird: Free Your Inbox

Wow. It was about time to have a beautiful modern UI on this legendary software!
in reply to Thunderbird: Free Your Inbox

Oh, it looks so good - can't wait to get the update. :) Thanks for all the hard work!!!
in reply to Thunderbird: Free Your Inbox

Great job so far! 👍 I've been using the Supernova interface since Thunderbird 112 beta - it's gotten more refined up through 115 beta and works quite well. I've been using it as my primary email client without any major issues ✌ 😁
in reply to Thunderbird: Free Your Inbox

Looking forward to try it out...

Updates for stable channel on Monday too?

in reply to Thunderbird: Free Your Inbox

Having been on the beta for a while, I can only say that the new layout is absolutely amazing! Congrats on the launch!🥳
in reply to Thunderbird: Free Your Inbox

Waiting for this release to finally get my mom to start using a mail client. Want something we both use so I can walk her through stuff. Thanks to all the devs and contributors for all the hard work!
in reply to Thunderbird: Free Your Inbox

Please tell me i can switch that to the old layout o.o
That's horrible big and a waste of space and way to many colors o.o
in reply to Thunderbird: Free Your Inbox

Any chance of a system tray icon for notifications when the client is closed? This is the only reason why I don't use thunderbird.
in reply to Thunderbird: Free Your Inbox

Time to give Apple Mail a pass. Hoping the new list view will get some more polish to look like in the early mockups. Have been using the beta for private mails for quite some time and looking forward to the stable release 😍
in reply to Thunderbird: Free Your Inbox

can Thunderbird desktop receive and notify about new emails in the background when the window is closed?

(I mean minimized in tray smh like KDE has)

in reply to Thunderbird: Free Your Inbox

Yeah!!!!!!
I was waiting for it. I tested the beta version and I really liked it.
I just move back to thunderbird from Gmail. With my own email address, my work address, and my old gmail account.

Thanks for the effort, you Rock!

in reply to Thunderbird: Free Your Inbox

@GhostOnTheHalfShell Last time I tried to use Thunderbird with Google workspace account, all my calendar events were messed up. All guests were removed from events and sync went in a loop. Hopefully a better experience this time.
in reply to Thunderbird: Free Your Inbox

really uncool how you can just block extensions at will remotely though. What if another “pocket” collaboration comes along, or the board gets an offer and doesn’t like ublock origin?
in reply to Thunderbird: Free Your Inbox

Will the latest version be available via snap? I'd doubt the Ubuntu 20.04 repo would have it.
in reply to Thunderbird: Free Your Inbox

there's still no way to turn that search bar at the top and get regular native window frame?
in reply to Thunderbird: Free Your Inbox

I've been using thunderbird for a while for everything but e-mail (rss, calendar, irc). I'll give e-mail a shot once this is launched 🚀. If this works well I'm all set to switch to Linux again...
in reply to Thunderbird: Free Your Inbox

Oh no. Without reading the list of changes, any time software makers say they going to make something more modern and more beautiful it usually means they hid every useful control because because somebody thought desktop interfaces should be as simplistic as phones.

I dread this.

in reply to Thunderbird: Free Your Inbox

I'm not sure if anyone has requested this, but please add a delete button in "Cards View".

The current implementation requires opening the message to delete it.

I like "Cards View" but that missing little button is enough to make me stick to "Table View".

@MsDropbear42 Rest assured, you can set it up to feel very familiar. The existing layouts and orientations are still there, we've just added some (non-default, for now) options.

Looks good at least. I will certainly want to try this out when it arrives.
in reply to Thunderbird: Free Your Inbox

I really wonder HOW people work when I see them dread interface updates like that, fearing for their "workflow". I’m not judging (ok, maybe a little), I’m genuinely curious. For my personal email, I’ve switched 7-8 times between email softwares (not counting mobile), and at work, my principle has always been "read = forget about it, unread = you’ve got something to do". As long a search is powerful enough, I never needed more…
in reply to Thunderbird: Free Your Inbox

Super excited about this. I have been waiting to switch to Thunderbird for a while and more that this new UI is out I am gonna finally do it!
in reply to Thunderbird: Free Your Inbox

are the message text previews not part of this release?
I remember the mockup had that.
in reply to Kunal Agrawal

@kunalagrawal They are not, sorry. We just couldn't finish that element in time - not in a form we were content releasing.

The mockup is still our moving target, though, and Supernova represents the first step toward that.

in reply to Thunderbird: Free Your Inbox

Glad to see the classic view will remain. As a screen magnifier user that new gmail app style look isn't ideal.
in reply to Thunderbird: Free Your Inbox

Am I the only one who, when I hear about a beautiful new look and feel for a piece of software, I get a sinking feeling and dread the possible accessibility regressions.
in reply to Thunderbird: Free Your Inbox

The only thing I personally do not like is the left panel strip. I think this should not be in a different color but follow the entire app window color. Other than that I am really looking forward to this a lot and am excited! 🤩️
in reply to Thunderbird: Free Your Inbox

New interface looks a lot like Outlook. Please let me change it back to the old interface. I've been using Thunderbird for longer than I can remember and I did so because I hated the look and feel of Outlook.

Also, I understand the need for a redesign to get new users, but what about us old school users?

in reply to Thunderbird: Free Your Inbox

Really excited for this! Been constantly going to the About Thunderbird page to see if the update is here.
in reply to Thunderbird: Free Your Inbox

Congrats to the Thunderbird team! The UI is such a huge improvement over 102. Can't wait to give this a try and finally unify a bunch of inboxes I have spread across different email providers.
