I'm in the lookout for a new #email provider. Requirements: No megacorp, located within the EU, accessible via IMAP and webmail, professionally maintained. Support for calendar and contacts is a plus. Any recommendations?

I’ve been using mailbox.org with a custom domain for about 3 years and haven’t had any issues. They’re based out of Germany, support imap even including native push for the iOS Mail app, their webmail is also pretty accessible if I need it, they also support calendar and contacts sync but I haven’t set that up so can’t comment on how well it works.

@pitermach Thanks! I think @Marco recommended it too. I remember checking them out back then but didn't stick with it for some reason, can't remember what it was. Anyway, good to hear you haven't had any issues with it. Most likely I didn't either.

@Marco @pitermach I use fastmail, imap support works great! The webinterface is usable. And has integration with 1password

@pitermach Hey Piotr, have you tried Mailbox's conference thingy? Apparently it's called OpenTalk, is in-browser. Asking because I'm on the lookout for a new platform I can use to teach here, have run out of patience with Zoom.

@Scott I have not, but I might be able to convince some people for an impromptu testing session and let you know what I think. Guessing accessibility, audio quality both for mic and screen sharing are a priority?
in reply to Pitermach

@pitermach You guess right of course. Would be happy to hop on and poke around with you if we're free at the same time.
in reply to Scott

@Scott OK, we just did some testing, here are a few takeaways. The accessibility is not bad, clearly someone was thinking about it during development because there’s landmarks and proper use of aria everywhere. Sadly there’s no sounds or live regions to notify you when someone does pretty much anything which could be better. The audio quality is where it gets underwhelming though. For just talking, the quality is fine though the noise reduction is kind of aggressive, and you’re unsurprisingly transmitting in Mono. What’s worse is that if you screen share, the computer audio goes through that same processing so also gets turned into mono and aggressively noise reduced, and there are no options to tweak the audio settings.

@pitermach Oooh, sounds like it'll at least be worth hitting them up to ask if there's a roadmap for making the audio any more flexible. Thanks for checking.
