@nygl have you had any success installing Linux on an older MBP? I have a 2014 and 2016 MBP which I have been running the latest macOS on (unsupported) and they just can't cope any more. I have given Linux a go in the past, but I've not found a distro which plays nicely with MBP hardware #linux
