I'm almost 100% certain that the books are not part of the official canon and nor are the Big Finish audios. Of course, the BF audios and novels take great pains to conform to the existing TV canon. I'm happy to be corrected about this. And, btw, that is not a stupid question at all. #DoctorWho

Yes, they are most certainly canon. The BBC has strict control over what Big Finish can release, as in they need to run their scripts through the BBC before they start recording.
The books are published by BBC Books. In the past, there were different right holders and licensed series, see Virgin, the Target Line, etc.
