#Spotted on the Market Day Before Christmas in Aotearoa New Zealand:

A cheerful Pomeranian is rotating in a skipping circle below a hotdog being eaten by its human.
Perpetual Motion Dog is generating more energy than it's consuming.
If only science could harness this power for good!

A young human (5?) in grinch themed T-shirt and shorts is holding up a Bundaberg ginger beer to his little sister, saying officiously: "Cheers!" and then instructing her imperiously that she has to say "Cheers!" back or it "Doesn't WORK!"
Little Sister is looking pugnaciously skeptical.

A man (30s?) is studying some earrings with a cheerful smile. He looks down at his small human (4?) in a Spiderman t-shirt and asks: "Which ones d'you think Nana would like?"
Small Human Spiderman gives him an incredulous look before roaring: "The PRETTY ONES!"
Some things are just obvious.

A tiny human is putting on a full sturm und drang performance.
Hand beseechingly raised to Mum.
Face a picture of tearful fury as she bellows: "I WANT STRAWBERRIES!"
Mum says wryly. "You've GOT strawberries in your lap Bub."
"BUT I WANT OTHER STRAWBERRIES."
The strawberry struggle is real.

A pâtissier (30s?) stops his partner from offering their last madeleine to customers because it's already taken. Moments later, a very serious looking small human (3?) arrives with his Mum and accepts his weekly madeleine treat with a solemn high five and a hug.

A tiny human (2?) is hugging Dad around the neck.
But wait!
He's not a tiny human!
He's a BIG SHARK!
And he's gonna eat Dad's face!
Making mighty munching "UM UM UM" noises as laughter bubbles up from Dad's tummy.

A woman (40s?) is standing by her open car door. Groceries loosely placed on her back seat.
A tray of fresh strawberries in her hand.
She's got to get her market veges home but first...
maybe she should eat some of these strawberries.
A small smile as she tries her first one.

A teen (13?) has been given the task of carrying a bunch of asparagus while Mum chooses tomatoes.
But wait.
This is not asparagus!
It's a microphone for broadcasting all of Mum's movements and motivations!
Wearing a devilishly cheeky smile.
Ducking Mum's swat with a laugh and a yelp.

A man (50s?) in a faded band T-shirt, paint-flecked shorts and boots is quickly striding through the markets while wearing a determined expression.
He's got multiple packets of bratwurst sausages in his arms.
He's got places to go and things to do.
And they most likely involve barbeque.

A woman (18?), the spitting image of a young Joni Mitchell is inspecting a cherry stall.
Long blonde hair, a white crochet top, flair jeans and bare feet.
She picks up a bag of cherries and looks at it thoughtfully before turning to grin at a nearby busker who grins back.

#Spotted at an A&P Show in Aotearoa New Zealand:

A tiny human (2?) has spotted a pen of puppies.
Studying them for a long moment, she bursts into tears.
Dad asks what's wrong and looking up at him in abject anguish she wails: "I WANT TO PAT THEM ALL!"

A small human (3?) is looking with avid fascination at a Fancy Bantam rooster.
Fancy Bantam suddenly crows with epic aplomb.
Small Human jumps.
Small Human scowls.
Small Human studies Fancy Bantom with suspicion.
Are birds meant to do that?
He's not sure, but he's keeping an eye on this one.

At a doggy parade three young humans are walking a loaf shaped bulldog down a red carpet.
But wait!
Dog Loaf isn't stopping! (oh no!)
Dog Loaf is off the carpet and headed for the horizon. (Ahh)
Places to go and things to see!
Can they manage to turn him around?!
(They can... Eventually.)

Two small humans (3 & 6?) are pleading with Dad to take them to the bouncy castle.
Jumping up and down, circling him while skipping and roaring: "PUHLLLLLEAAAASE."
Dad's mouth twitches before he says deadpan: "Yeah. I dunno. You look too bouncy to go on a bouncy castle."
Outraged howls ensue!

A man (60s?) with a long grey beard, wearing a broad brimmed hat, is sitting at a spinning wheel.
Foot rhythmically moving up and down on the pedal, expression totally chill.
Controlled mayhem happening at the nearby doggy fashion show and the shearing competition but he's an oasis of peace.

#Spotted While Roaming in Aotearoa New Zealand:

A tiny human (2?) runs his fastest down a garden path to greet his big brother (5?) home from school.
Big Brother stoically accepting all hero worship.
Little Brother doing a happy skip-dance of welcome as he leads the way back into the house.

A very serious man (60s?) is doing some cycling along a beach path on a no-nonsense trail bike.
But what is this?!
A little black dog sitting on a special basket in front of the handlebars? Ears flapping in the wind and a goofy doggy grin on its face?
Ah, maybe opposites attract.

A young human (8?) is practicing doing bunny hops on his scooter.
He doesn't quite have the hang of it and there're a few stops and starts but it's okay.
He's having fun.
Grinning when he gets one right.

Six young humans (9?) are playing volleyball after school. Five have their game faces on, taking epic dives at the ball.
Meanwhile, one is doing a dreamy on-the-spot dance.
Yes there's a bit of fuss going on, but she's happy in her own wee world.

A big man (20s?) in business casual is lounging on his tummy on some grass in a park. Big Man's big dog (white staffy) is affectionately nuzzling his human's beard with his nose, tail wagging with helicopter-enthusiasm.
Birdsong in trees overhead.
A city settling in for the night.

#Spotted at a Vineyard Picnic in Aotearoa New Zealand:

A very friendly dog (red cloud kelpie), her bottom square with age, is sprawled on a picnic rug as numerous small humans compete to see Who Can Pat Her Best.
Friendly Dog is in her element, a doggy smile on her face.
This is the life.

An amiable barefoot man (60s?) is sitting cross-legged on a picnic blanket, solicitously serving deliciously crumbly home-made scones to friends old and new.
Butter?
Home made jam? He'll see you sorted.
People taking a bite and grinning with happiness.

A small human (3?) in a pretty dress has decided she is the STRONGEST.
Little does Big Brother (5?) know that he's about to be on the end of a SNEAK ATTACK.
Small human barreling into his tummy, knocking him over.
Rolling on the grass like giggling puppies.
WHO WILL WIN?
(It's a draw!)

A small human (4?) in a fairy dress has commandeered a sit-on wooden digger and is showing the other kids how to do it.
She's firm with her opinions, expression resolute.
She is the digging fairy and she will get this job done.

A small human (3?) has decided that she is in charge of walking the family dog amongst the people.
Family Dog is a Good Girl, and although she's tempted by all the picnic treats on offer, she's not sampling any.
They head off to roam for a bit amongst the vines.

Short description. You're looking at people picnicking amongst grape vines with trees and mountains in the distance. Long description: You're standing under a big shady tree with a lichen-coated sturdy branch overshadowing the picture going diagonally from left to right. Beneath the branch is a low hedge with small pointy leaves, and beyond that hedge are a bunch of people of all ages, makes and models spread out on a motley assortment of picnic rugs. There are dogs. This is a kiwi gathering. There are always dogs and they are good dogs. The grass they are sitting on is newly mowed and the waft of sun warmed fresh cut grass is in the air. The vines have big green leaves. The trees beyond the vines are an assortment of all makes and models. Picture Hobbiton. I know, it's a cliche but it kind of fits here for convenience. Beyond those trees you can see the shadow of a mountain range stretched luxuriously out. Imagine a coolish breeze coming off those mountains, because it's New Zealand and the weather is gonna get you. The sound you're hearing is most likely a chill afrobeat, people laughing and chatting and the odd small human explaining EMPHATICALLY to her friends how to use a digger.

A woman (50s?) in a floral dress wraps her arm around her friend's waist, grinning cheekily: "Shall we go in the shop over there and gasp at the prices?"
Her friend laughs: "Yes!"
They wander off, heads bowed together.

A dapper young human (11?) is promenading along in a bowler hat, waistcoat, tie, suit jacket, ironed jeans and shiny black shoes.
He's got a walking stick in one hand and his other is looped through Nan's arm.
Her pretty polka dot dress fluttering in the breeze.
Charm personified.

A small human (4?) is perusing bouquets of flowers with a critical eye.
Finally she chooses one, pays from an embroidered change purse, then kisses it with great ceremony before handing it to her farm gear and gumboot wearing Dad.
Dad taken off guard, eyes watering, picks her up for a big hug.

A small human (3?) is walking across a paddock carpark towards the market, holding Mum's hand.
Speaking in careful, optimistic tones he says: "Mum, when we get there do you want an ice cream or a pancake? I think you should have the ice cream."

A woman (70s?) reaches over a fence to pat a very hairy black yak. In return she gets a generous lick on the hand and laughs, saying to her friend. "Look at all that snot! Oh well, it'll wash off." She gives the yak an affectionate look and they wander off. (Continued Below)

A tiny human (2?) has spotted Mum's cake on a cafe table.
Ahh...
Mum is distracted talking to a friend.
Hmm...
If he just climbs on this chair...
And then onto the table,
And then SITS on the cake...
She'll never notice, right?
(She notices.)

A woman (60s?) pulls over and offers a lift to an international student walking down her quiet inner city street.
It's bucketing with rain and he at first looks confused and then accepts gratefully.
They zoom off down the hill into town, safe and dry.

A young human (8?) has spotted a shopping trolley parked in a no parking zone.
This is clearly NOT correct.
Scowling, he marches forward and stomps it back to the trolley return before rejoining Mum with a vindicated air.
Not all carpark heroes wear capes.

A tiny human (1?) is sitting on Mum's knee while Mum talks to friends.
Tiny Human is watching the faces around her intently, mirroring their expressions.
First a frown.
Then a smile.
Then a BIG chortle when everyone laughs.
She's getting the hang of this!

A wiry man (60s?) in a plaid shirt, jeans and work boots is waiting in line for coffee, talking on his phone. He says: "Ya right love? Flat tire? Yeah. I'll be there in a minute. I'll get ya a coffee and'll come sort it out. Don't you worry. Love ya."
He hangs up and orders two coffees to go.

#Spotted at a Country Festival in Aotearoa New Zealand:

A small human (4?) with tiger face paint is facing another bigger small human (5?) with spiderman face paint.
With great authority she announces: "I am a TIGER which is MUCH BETTER than SPIDERMAN. so you HAVE to do what I say!"

Numerous tiny humans and their dads are lined up to sit in a fire engine and to make the BIG HOSE go. Both tiny humans and dads showing equal levels of excitement. This is a FIRE ENGINE. You don't get cooler than that.

A small, stern young human (4?) is fiercely studying an elderly Jersey cow who is calmly accepting all pats as her due.
When Mum asks if Small Human would like to pat the cow he scowls. "That is NOT A COW! It's a dog. You pat dogs!"
Placid Jersey Cow seems unbothered by this bendy taxonomy.

A tiny human (2?) is most insistent that her Care Bear should get to cuddle some sleeping piglets.
The only problem is... how?
Tiny Piglets are snuggled up, snoozing in their hut and she cant quite reach them through the fence.
Hmmm.
Maybe Care Bear cuddles can happen long distance instead.

A young human (4?) is given a precious sausage wrapped in a slice of white bread, tomato sauce* on top.
This is valuable treasure and she's carefully trying to maneuver it into her sparkly unicorn handbag.
But what is this?!
For some inexplicable reason Dad is objecting to this excellent plan.

You are looking at a white sign propped in the fork of a green leafy tree on a very sunny day. The sign is hand painted wood with red words saying: "Fire Engines". There are two arrows either side of these words pointing towards the fire engines, which are not visible, but you feel reassured because there's a sign. This is most important, because as anyone who has ever attended a rural fair knows, the fire engines are the coolest part of the whole thing and everyone wants to know where they are urgently. Beyond the sign you can see a big blue sky, green lush grass, and numerous people all wandering around stalls. Most of them walking away from the fire engines, possibly because they have seen the huge queue for them and have decided to get some food first. While looking at this sign, please imagine the sound of well over a thousand people having a very good time, small humans playing. A Morris Dancing's group's penny whistle and accordion and, most importantly of all, the WOOP WOOP noise of the fire engine siren going off in short bursts every now and then when someone is lucky enough to get to press the siren button. The smells in the air are of the nearby Brazilian roast meat truck, the nearby Dutch pancake stall that is currently brewing a very strong batch of coffee in traditional kettles, very green grass and sunscreen. You know, looking at this picture, that if you were here, you would be having a rather marvellous day.

#Spotted at a recent Country Fete in Aotearoa #NewZealand

Two psychics have been given stalls on either side of a small community hall. One has a customer and is intensely giving a reading. The other is watching on from the other side of the hall, shuffling tarot cards, expression pointedly pensive.

A small human (4) is speaking to the owner of a crochet teddy stall. He is earnestly explaining that their teddies are nice, but his bear is much better because it's his. He then holds out his very well-loved bear to show them.

A man (60s?) is at a table covered in vintage, well-loved Matchbox cars. This is a precious collection and when asked, he says: "I'm sellin' the whole lot." and watches with a smile when a small human is enraptured by a Lamborghini.

A man (50s?) is inspecting a fresh potato stall. A tiny Chihuahua is nestled in a woven bag slung over his shoulder with its head just poking out, sniffing all the smells.

A small human (3?) is standing with a tiny puppy (poodle?) Tiny puppy wants to make friends and is wagging its tail with the power of a miniature turbine, its button eyes shining. Small human wants to make friends by roaring: "I HAVE A PUPPY" at anyone who smiles in her direction.

Any typos spotted in this post were caused by this cat who triggered a cacophony of pspspsps from the audience waiting to see a band last night. This cat did not care for the lure of pspsps. It was a proximity creature (as are the typos) and wished to be adored from afar.

You're beholding either a cat or a furry dragon by the way it's crouched down in what I like to call the "chicken" or "loaf" pose on some mossy bricks in an outdoor courtyard that will soon be a dance floor with a lot of people doing some wonderfully dodgy "The Uncle and Auntie Who Give No Hoots Are At the Wedding" dancing. But that is neither here nor there at the moment for this cat is an orange and white monster. His size is not readily apparent in this picture because of perspective, but looking at this picture, please imagine a ridiculous number of people surrounding this cat to be making the pspsps noise while this cat looks at them with a small amount of kitty disdain. For this is a fluffy proximity cat who wishes his furry majesty to be admire from afar. Meanwhile the band are having a beer in the background, setting up their instruments and are generally loitering under big shady trees as dusk descends.
