If you are a Pagan and are fond of UU values, you might be interested in CUUPs. There might be a local chapter to you,

Being able to read is not a requirement of paganism. It may seem that way when a newcomer asks, "Where do I start?" and we all answer by naming books, but you don't have to actually read to become a Pagan.

A majority of people (in the USA) read below a 6th grade level. So when we insist on reading ancient codexes and studying college-level textbooks, it turns many people away.

In the USA, illiteracy is protected under the Americans with Disabilities Act, which means that a reasonable accommodation is expected. Pagans do not discriminate, so we cannot expect everyone to read complex texts.

So next time someone interested in paganism asks, "Where do I start?" consider giving them practical advice instead of a list of book titles. Consider offering to chat and talk to them one-on-one. I'd like to see paganism move a little away from academia and more toward community.
