Mysterious emails from a woman named Donna Triply: For years, I was amused to receive emails from Donna. I often wondered who she was. These seemingly random emails would come from her under various circumstances. After probably 15 years after sending my first email, I figured out who this fabled woman was. Before I tell you, I have to say that my bestie and I had a huge laugh about this Donna person this morning over coffee. My friend also wondered who this person could be. She did know some Donna's, but the last names didn't match. Then, the light bulb went on for her as it did for me. This email header started with DoNotReply which, for a screen-reader user sounds like Donna Triply. So, the infamous woman has come to light and we now know who she is, visiting us from the auto-responder universe!

Incidentally, on the topic of LTS distros where Orca works well on Wayland, particularly with GNOME, I regret that the implementation of proper keystroke monitoring and grabbing, which I prototyped in mid 2024 and which someone else brought to production in time for GNOME 48, didn't get there in time for RHEL 10, which ships GNOME 47. Maybe I could have done more to bring that important functionality to production sooner, but my efforts were focused elsewhere in the second half of 2024.

I've already got ideas for when I can stream and accounts are enabled. I've got plans and ideas. However, when it is, I am not going to stream when you guys are streaming. There is no way thatI am doing a stream when you are, especially if I want to watch.
Apparently Redspot, or any NVGT game on the latest development version of NVGT, takes about 30 or so seconds to start up on my computer. I know this, because when I installed the September 29th version of NVGT, any game or script started up almost instantly. What could be going on here?
Also holy crap the ruger is a hole other beast. Sam tupy using it like a western gunslinger. Also I had to smoke up a bowl just to celebrate this game!

An interesting thing. I give a name and password the first time, no problem. Go to play it says 'You haven't given a name yet.' Of course when I go back to set my name and password it says 'Someone has already used this name...' Conundrum indeed.
@FreakyFwoof So I apologize for that confusion. All you need to do to play is to go into the options menu and set your name, then click play. If you have any reason you don't want anyone else to log in with that name so you can be constantly identifiable, you can use the allocate a name option to asign a name to a password which, if done, must be set in the options menu if the given name (also set from the options menu) is used to log in.
Will RS be open sourced or at least self-hostable when it's in a more stable state so that people aren't left with a useless bunch of ones and zeros should the main server die again? #StopKillingGames
@cubic Even if it takes a while, as I've aptly demonstrated recently I tend to provide stuff open source and/or more freely once I've 100% fully moved on from it and many more active things besides. So in short no I'm gonna keep a few things such as the rs code to myself for now haha, but unless I have no say in the matter, I don't think that in the end much of this stuff will die forever even if it does for some years until I determine beyond certain that it's time to move on to bigger and better things with no going back.
Yeah, that was why I was trying to figure out if it was another crash and no one was around to fix it or if it was planned. Both work just fine. I had a day of fun, so.
@ShotgunSpoon It's back for the moment, but indeed, it could stay down at any time should we have any reason to do that. In this case I got so tired after the streams I forgot to push a commit to git with the latest stabilizing change, thus when someone else on the team updated the server it reverted my stabilizing change and it crashed until I woke up. Others on the team will have more access to restart completely broken servers soon enough, I went from lets pwn anyone who gets my code 6 years ago to lets actually let some of my friends help me develop this thing, meanwhile dumping a bunch of other code and prereleases at the community and find that, to mine and the game's detriment, it's taking a second for my spirit to be ready to give up even more control in the form of letting others have any sort of ssh access to my server to fix such things haha. I'll get there very soon but I can only do so much character development in so much time hahaha

My initial idea was to sell the templates individually for $19, or offer a bundle of 100 templates for $250
However, I’ve also been thinking about a different approach: fundraising. If I can raise a certain amount upfront, I could build the 100 templates and release them for free under an open-source license, so anyone can use them, customize them, and own them

Here's an idea: someone should produce a series of ebooks that teach how to use GNOME and popular applications (e.g. Firefox and LibreOffice) with Orca, in a systematic way with activities for each concept or task, then use the proceeds from sales of those ebooks to help fund development of Orca and the free desktop accessibility stack in general, as NV Access has done with NVDA and their training ebooks. I think there would be a market for that.
I've been working through the NVDA basic training ebook, which covers the basics of using Windows with NVDA, with a blind high-school student. I've been repeatedly frustrated with how the book has to cover the variations between versions of Windows, and how Windows still nonetheless surprises us both by deviating from the book in some way. His Notepad had Copilot enabled, and I had to figure out how to go into Settings and turn that off.
Of course, GNOME and (especially?) Firefox are subject to UI churn as well, and Mozilla is now adding AI where people don't necessarily want it. But maybe it's not as bad (yet?) as what Microsoft has been doing with Windows 11.
One possible mitigation might be if the training material was aligned with a recent LTS distro. Maybe the recently released Debian 13 (trixie)?
this makes me wonder if alternatively/additionally we should create a screen reader training app that walks you through concepts like moving through different kinds of navigation etc so that you’re less relying on specific steps and more building skills for problem solving
Yeah I was just thinking we could remove the issues of UI churn by making some interfaces specifically meant to practice navigation concepts and then document them in the app itself so that you don’t have the documentation not matching the reality of the exercise

please don't blame yourself over something Red Hat did not pay you to do (presumably). Looking at the GNOME Release Calendar, 47 is no longer supported; by using 47, they're essentially in unsupported territory, so beyond that this is 100% on them.
though Red Hat _does_ backport features if there is a good reason of doing so, so maybe it makes sense to bring it up. But without a paying customer (well.. all state agencies here) pushing for it, there isn't a big incentive to do so.
However if it's deemed to be important, it might get backported by Red Hat engineers.
Correction: RHEL 10 backported the keyboard monitor implementation in Mutter, and updated at-spi2-core and Orca to versions with that feature. Thanks to @AdrianVovk for pointing out that this was likely.
Still, I think it might be better to align with Debian 13 (trixie), which ships GNOME 48, for my training idea, both because it has a slightly newer version of GNOME (and presumably other components too), and because the upstream distro is fully free.
@AdrianVovk So what distro would you recommend for somebody like me who is quite an experienced user but not a developer? My last linux experiments I had with a Raspi5 where i tried to build my own mini computer with a qwerty keyboard inspired by the BTSpeak. But unfortunately Orca didn‘t work well on raspberry PI OS and i didn‘t manage to fix this by using another desktop.
Debian is just as susceptible to the usual "LTS shipping ancient software" problem. It just happened to release late enough that it got a new enough GNOME version to include this one change you're focusing on.
As far as I understand Debian's policies, if Debian had shipped GNOME 47 they wouldn't backport this accessibility fix to Debian Stable like RH did for RHEL 10. Users would be waiting for Debian 14 and GNOME 51/52, or messing with the Debian Backports repo, which is a can of worms
I agree, any help I coudl get woudl be very nice indeed. Though I'm teaching my self mait. SOme of orka's commands especially for the internet are very layered.
1. Pair this with a blind-friendly distro that has everything configured (you'd need NFB/ACB support for this, as you probably need the metaphorical "company letterhead" to get secure boot certified).
2. Autotranslate into all the languages via LLMs. Sure, human translations are better than automatic translations, but automatic translations are better than nothing. Source: Not a native English speaker, I've actually relied on them back when Google Translate was borderline unusable.
3. Preferrably, pair this with scripts that can "walk through" the scenarios described in the book, making sure Orca output stays consistent as versions change. You could also this to automatically record multilingual walkthroughs, with human-written commentary between the steps.
NVAccess basically ignores 80+% of the addressable market with their basic training materials. While NVDA itself is translatable (and actively translated), everything else, including their website, is pretty much as hostile to international visitors as you can get. This is pretty hypocritical, as the English-speaking countries are the ones where you're most likely to get either JAWS, government-sponsored AT training, or both.
I doubt we'd need a fully custom distro, with its own boot loader and unified kernel image that would need to be specially signed for Secure Boot. A stock boot loader and UKI from one of the major distros should be enough. For the rest of the distro, a Debian Pure Blend (debian.org/blends/) might be enough.
I really like the idea of using the training activities as regression tests.
I know many would love this! It is incredibly hard to make Evergreen tech writing though, but I do think it can be done to where minimal changes need to be made to the documentation over the years

Wow, so excited! My replacement Cadence arrived today. Tactile Engineering were kind enough to also include for us four hard-shell cases, so both Jess and myself get two of them, one for each Braille display unit. These cases are rectangular and pocketable, with a nice pocket for a charging cable on the inside, and a strap that you can secure over the display whilst it is in the case to keep it from moving around. Really like them, it'll really be useful for my international travels. New display works perfect, no uncalibrated pins causing troubles on it.
I was asked by a family member why it was taking so long to paste something large into a new Microsoft Word document on their computer, I sarcastically replied it was because it takes a while to upload it all to the copilot AI nonense first. And then I realized accidentally I might be right...I disabled copilot in Word and it went back to being instant again
So that's cool that Microsoft seems uploading everything you paste into a new Word doc to their servers now.
